Re: Changes to System Update and related tools - Please read

Unlike many ThinkPad users, I'm at the "slightly above idiot level" when it comes to computers. I bought a W500 to properly run the CAD/CAM and education software I regularly use. TVSU was marketed as a great tool to keep my W500 running smoothy with my limited computer abilities, according to the Lenovo rep I spoke to.

This is not what was promissed or advertised. This is a great tool that will cost Lenovo future customers and further damage thier already sinking reputation.

I finally changed the main drive to Seagate 7200.4, only compatible after technician hands, and also changed to 64 bit.

So, the technician installed some drives, but not things like access connections, or the recovery and backup software.

I tried to find that by myself without any success. And It would be so easy with the update system.

What could we do if for example we buy a computer with Windows, and after 8 months the vendor just take out the system from the computer?

Lenovo software is not vital for my work but it helps and also comes with the computer, may be in the future they will come for some part of the hardware they miss?

Software is expensive as the hardware.

Re: Changes to System Update and related tools - Please read

Well, looks like Lenovo has blown it.  My company purchased 120 laptops from a competitor.  Lenovo was in contention, mainly due to the System Update utility (these are going to salesmen, many with very limited technical capabilities).  However, without it, TPTB didn't see any clear reason to prefer Lenovo.

Now 120 laptops doesn't sound like much - but it's a major change in direction.  Over the years, the company has purchased thousands of laptops, many of them Thinkpads from IBM then Lenovo.  But if these laptops work out like people think they will, there will be no more Lenovo purchases.

Too bad.  I've always liked my Thinkpad, but I guess when it gets time to upgrade my system the company will give me something else.

I'll also add - had Lenovo made this available the beginning of May, and/or communicated their plans better, the outcome may have been a lot different.  Their lack of communication and failure to have the new system in place in a timely manner (which should have been done BEFORE the old system was taken down) also counted against them.

Man, this is going to make upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 on my tablet much more difficult. I know, I know, I can download the drivers one by one, but it really is a hassle and makes upgrading the OS a chore. Hopefully Lenovo is designing a new system to coincide with the Win 7 launch, but I remain doubtful especially with that so called "Message Center Plus" upgrade that has proven to be absolutely useless.

I understand that the economy has been bad lately, and though the consensus is that this was a cost cutting move, I really hope that isn't the case. I bought this tablet for 3 reasons, durability, portability, and ease of maintainence. ThinkVantage has been the backbone of the Thinkpad brand, and TVSU has allowed Lenovo to compete with the likes of Apple with decent proprietary software that made its laptops truly exceptional.

I love this tablet. I have written and typed on it for years, and will continue to do so. I just hope Lenovo can deliver the same or better quality that I have experienced with this machine. If not, I will take my business elsewhere.

It's not easy to find for me, there are 97 files and I have to chose from there, I don't really know what are the most of them, and the few I recognize like the recovery has patches and updates, and I don't know which version I downloaded or which one I have.

For example the technician installed a fingerprint software that looks like the old one... And I don't know what he has done with the bios, or any other driver, so check all, find each one, all is not only complicate but it demands a lot of time. Also 32 and 64 bit are not separated and there is many files that I don't know for how many bits they are.

Keep the crap, throw away the best.

The bottom line is I'm disappointed.

What's the issue?

Just wait till 31st May (23.59.59 hours), and Lenovo will beat the deadline that they have set for themselves.

I'm an old phart who has been messing with confusers since IBM 1401 days. Putting everything in perspective, VM started life at about 100,000 lines of code, MVS was a whopping 3 million lines of code because it actually had storage protection and error recovery. I'm guessing Windows 7 will come in at 60 million lines of code. Losing the update capability puts us back into the ThinkPad 760CD days and the update matrices are just as ugly unless you are used to them.  At least they don't make you use real floppy disks.

IMHO, the interrelatioships and complexities of code and iron require some facility to put on critical updates.  The Microsofties have recognised this and it has improved their QA process.  Put a bad fix out to a bazillion people and its likely to be job threatening so the process tends to improve itself.

If Lenovo is admitting they don't have the intellectual capital to "do it right", then they made the right decision, but turning newbies lose with the driver matrix won't make friends and influence people, and there will be a revenue penalty imposed by people who vote with their dollars.
