Re: Changes to System Update and related tools - Please read

2009-05-20, 15:27 PM

I have painstakingly manually created a journal of all the Thinkpad software and drivers on my x61, noting down existing versions and then going to the Lenovo downloads website to read through whether newer ones are available and necessary.. Then downloaded and labelled each required package into a "Lenovo Updates" folder on my notebook... Then performed the actual installations of the new packages... Wow! Think I've become a homeuser-update-expert by now!  To protect my newly updated system, I have made system backups using R&R to an external hard drive and to DVDs as well. To further lock-in this precious system in its current freshly-updated state, I am looking at some third party image backup apps to make another image of my system.. just in case... I could be turning into a schizo freeak.. thanks to Lenovo and its suddenly retracted TVSU...

I would just like to say that for all that's been said about Thinkpads, they are wonderful machines and I feel saddened that they have fallen into the hands of Lenovo.. I will always treasure my Thinkpads, especially my older and still working X40 which carries the IBM logo... I read with dismay that  ".. Lenovo wants to shift its focus away from premium brands inherited from its purchase of IBM's PC unit in 2005 to promote low-cost computers and sales in emerging markets such as India, China and Poland. It also plans to shift from a strategy of long-term ties with corporate customers to a larger sales force working with retail channels, according to the Financial Times..."  This is truly sad... and could explain the strange and sudden manner in which TVSU got pulled off the shelf... If Lenovo wanted to shift its focus from premium brands... it should never have touched the Thinkpad brand in the first place....  Wish IBM could buy it back... Wish Obama could do something...

Lenovo is trying to coordinate the release of their "new messaging system" with the release of Vista SP2 (I hope...) With respect to SP2, there is an article on Computerworld stating that according to reports, "Microsoft will flip the switch either next week or the first week of June."  I just hope this is the case.

I believe you will need to call them to get a restore CD.  The full versions of that software as well as DVD player software are not available for download.

All,

I have just had the chance to demo a ThinkPad W500 vs. a Dell laptop of similar spec. As much as it pained me to accept, the ThinkPad is no longer what it used to be. Although it is still a decent laptop, better than an HP or Sony or Acer, the Dell seems to have surpassed it in the areas that matter most.

ThinkPads used to have that "crisp" feel to them. Dell has clearly been paying attention because it is solid. Without the ThinkPad automatic updates and the new addition of some awful and completely useless features in the software, the ThinkPad does not justify the cost. The Dell does not cost less, but it performs a whole lot better.

Sad to say, the product we all grew to love is gone and not coming back from Lenovo. My company is now supporting/recommending Dell and I hope they manage it better than Lenovo has.

Which Dell product are you refering to? XPS?  That would be about the only Dell i would consider to be in teh ThinkPad ballpark.
