Re: ThinkVantage System Update & T400

DrKhan,

yes System Update has stopped working for us home/small business users downloading directly from Lenovo. You can use Update Retriever instead -- see the third sticky in this forum. (In a corporate environment you can use Update Retriever and then patch registry so that System Update points to the corporate database instead -- this is the second sticky in this forum.)

T500: Vista 32, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 15.4" 1680x1050, 500GB 7200rpm, ATI Radeon HD3650 + Intel 4500MHD. T42: XP, 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, 14.1" 1024x768, 250GB PATA, ATI Radeon 7500.

Lenovo,

You have removed System Update as we all know. However, Lenovo still (as of 21 May, 2009) advertizes the advantages of System update on your website here: http://www.pc.ibm.com/presentations/us/thinkvantage/56/index.html?shortcut=accesscon& select MENU in the lower left then SYSTEM UPDATE

When is System Update going to be reinstated?

Complaining to IBM WORKS!!!

2009-05-22, 15:08 PM

Yesterday I sent angry mail to Mr. Palmisano. Today I got the mail from Complaint Dedicated Resolution Owner - Complaint Resolution Center of Excellence - Europe - IBM Global Sales Operations. They will "check the situation" and "request the official statement" from Lenovo regarding "this painful situation".

I should say I am impressed.

Regretfully, I very much doubt IBM can do anything to change Lenvo's self-destructive behavior. You got a polite reply from IBM and if IBM was still the owner, these probpems would be fixed a.s.a.p, or never would have occurred.

I also wrote Sam Palmisano and said I doubted he could do anything about this but he ought to know Lenovo was doing.

(FWIW, I worked with Sam when he was executive asst to IBM's then-CEO and I was an IBM corporate director.)

In 2005 Lenovo bought IBM’s PC business, with IBM retaining an 18.9 percent stake

Meanwhile BM’s holdings in Lenovo dropped to 4.7 percent in July 2008

I do not beleive I'll really success somehow to punish Lenovo truly badly. :) I do beleive we make some people there feel uncomfortable. :)

I changed to windows 7 and I didn't install anything from lenovo.... And everything is running OK.

I have an old backup of the last OS, made with rescue and recovery... How can I delete it? It is not shown anywhere but in the size of the disk.

Many thanks zilla,

I love the Update Retriever + ThinInstaller combo.

Worked fine for me, easy to setup and provide faster download (faster than TVSU).

Little issue with my lan driver: UR didn't downloaded the latest driver version but I hope the software will find the new drivers within few days.

A little question: into UR options you can only select the generic SO, I mean XP or Vista or whatever, but no references to the system bit platform. I mean, every downloaded driver package is both for x86 and x64 version of the same SO?

Thanks for the tips & best regards, Max.

The fact that when you run TSVU you get a message that says "the way we are updating software is changing, check back in May", and I'm writing this in late May, tells you that they've given up on software support.

From a business standpoint I think it reflects extremely poor brand management.  Having good update software that handles all the niggling little details is huge for the home office guy without direct IT support.  They are throwing away brand good will and abandoning an important segment, and they will pay as Lenovo prices drop to commodity levels to reflect their product support.  I can buy a "Lucky Sunshine No. 1 Best Quality" computer off eBay and I get the same support - None.

On the other hand, an early Vista "upgrade" blew away most of the Lenovo software that came with my computer.  Took me weeks to recover (I had to install the sound driver manually so that the update program could be installed!?)  If you aren't going to provide system software that is robust, you are better off not offering it.  I think the Lenovo software was poorly executed (or at least Vista really let Lenovo down), so perhaps upgrading it was just viewed as too expensive.

Still, would it kill Lenovo to have an update program that suggest what new drivers and patches should be considered?

Can't say I'd ever buy Lenovo again.  Certainly wouldn't pay any premium for it!

Mark --

Does this mean we can now uninstall or otherwise disable ThinkVantage System Update and/or Maintenance Manager?  (I'm always looking for services/processes to unload from my machine...)

If yes, then does that mean we can finally update Windows XP to SP3, or is there other Lenovo software that still conflicts with it?

Thanks! -- JCW2
