Many thanks zilla,

I love the Update Retriever + ThinInstaller combo.

Worked fine for me, easy to setup and provide faster download (faster than TVSU).

Little issue with my lan driver: UR didn't downloaded the latest driver version but I hope the software will find the new drivers within few days.

A little question: into UR options you can only select the generic SO, I mean XP or Vista or whatever, but no references to the system bit platform. I mean, every downloaded driver package is both for x86 and x64 version of the same SO?

Thanks for the tips & best regards, Max.

Well my experience is it's slower than TVSU -- probably because a huge number of people are doing the initial download.

When in UR you get the list of all updates to download you can select the ones you don't want and click on hide -- then you won't see them again. If you already downloaded them delete them in manage repository and then in your next update hide them.

T500: Vista 32, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 15.4" 1680x1050, 500GB 7200rpm, ATI Radeon HD3650 + Intel 4500MHD. T42: XP, 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, 14.1" 1024x768, 250GB PATA, ATI Radeon 7500.

Re: Complaining to IBM WORKS!!!

I support this petition.  I, also, support a fleet of between 175 to 250 ThinkPads at any given moment.  I've personally owned 5 ThinkPads before my current T61.  I'm currently considering the T500 as my regular personal laptop and a new fleet standard.  This move is like the other cost saving measures (ie: plastic cases, snap together display bezels) that rolled-out in the T61.  However, this will effect everything in my fleet.  Why should I continue to choose ThinkPad if my support assets are being lost?  Lenovo is losing the value that they gained by buying from "Big Blue."  Lenovo will need to come up with a better system update service - OR- spend exponentially greater amounts on marketing to students and housewives who will ruin the ThinkPad reputation with their habits, their remarks on poor quality and their big mouths.  We all know how this group of users can sully a brand and muck-up tech support lines.  Lenovo should consider these things.  I'm not so smart, but I can see the direction this move is heading.  I am delaying the next fleet purchase and looking at other makers until Lenovo takes a solid position on this "trial balloon."  LENOVO SHOULD AT LEAST CONTINUE SUPPORT ON THE THINKPAD LINE.   CUT CORNERS ON A PRODUCT LINE THAT THE CHEAP IDIOTS ALREADY BUY.

What's the need of the update system? I moved to windows 7 by myself...(I'm not an expert with computers) and I guess it download itself all the drivers it needs, and everything is working better than with vista. So, now I should download something from lenovo?

I have to ask. Do your function key combinations work? Can you toggle your 802.11 and Bluetooth Radios on and off via the onscreen applet? Can you toggle between the LCD and an external monitor. Does your On Screen Display work for volume control and Caps lock notification? Does your blue ThinkVantage key provide any use at all? Can you choose to hibernate or suspend based on the key combination? Presentation Director? Power Schemes and battery protection? Or does Win 7 have all that covered?

Re: Complaining to IBM WORKS!!!

Well I'm not really complaining. But I don't know how to download the software, and in fact I use to use some of that things and some other I didn't know about its existence.

How could I choose, and probably know what software or drivers should I download?

I only use access connections that I couldn't install it in vista x64, so guess I will not in 7 x64

I didn't know about battery protection but my battery that I almost never use, lasts half hour after one year.

And I also use the software to write DVD.

CapsLK works fine... And also the volume control but it doesn't show the volume level.

And yes... I can't choose (or I don't know how) to turn on wifi but not Bluetooth.

Well if they took away the update software, they should give a much more easy way to download everything. And say properly what does each software. I don't know what's that tvst or UR or whatever everybody is talking about.

And don't want to make a workshop of how to put together the laptop again.

So after all, cheers, I didn't knew that soft. I just use my edition software.

Please understand. I am not criticizing you, but as you describe your Thinkpad, it is obvious that you may be running and have an operating system in place, but many of the features that make Thinkpads special machines are no longer working on your machine because you do not have key Lenovo software components installed. If you do not need to use Bluetooth, or do not need to turn off your 802.11 radio on an airplane (although my T61p has a switch, too), that's fine. Also, Power Manager may have kept you from overcharging your battery, but if that's not important either, fine. But you see my point. Much of the feature set of Thinkpads depends on the Lenovo drivers, which must be correctly installed in the proper sequence. SU used to do that for us. Now we have to figure it out ourselves.
