I performed the same advice suggested by Stefan to get my FingerPrint reader to work too on my T400.

Re: Fingerprint System Not Available

Good afternoon Raven,

I was having the same problem and here's how I fixed it:

The problem isn't with the fingerprint software, but the windows device driver for the scanner.

1. Open "Control Panel"

2. Select "Hardware and Sound"

3. Select "Update device drivers" under "Device Manager"

4. Browse to "Personal Identification Devices"

5. Select "AuthenTec Inc. AES2810"

6. Right-click and select "Update Driver Software..."

7. Select the "Search automatically for updated driver software"

8. Restart your system

You will have to conveniently reenroll your fingerprints.

Thanks Lenovo, you owe me $100 bucks, no checks please :)

I had similar problem.  In fact, the Fingerprint System on my X301 didn't even work from the factory.  No matter how many factory image I restore from the Recovery partition, the system would only work during enrollment, afterwhich the AFSS (Authen Tec Fingerprint Service would not even start successfully.

This being a brand new machine, I sent it in for repair.  But after 2 depots and one local authorized repair center, I was still not getting the fingerprint to work consistently.

I also tried to update the driver and software to the latest (4/20/2009 version 8.1.2.37 for driver and 3.2.0.341 for software) numerous times.

Finally, what worked was removing the Authen Tec driver from the Device Manager manually (Start->Control Panel->Device Manager.  Open Personal Identification Device and Right click on Authen Tec Inc. AES2810 and Uninstall), Remove the Thinkvantage Fingerprint Software, reboot, and finally reinstall the 4/20/2009 Fingerprint Software from the Lenovo support page.

I hope this helps those others who are frustrated and hopeless like I was.

My sensor stopped working on my W500 after the latest update via System Update.

I did some changes in BIOS and it started working again.

The changes:

1. Changed Switchable graphics to discrete graphics. (Probably not the solution)

2. Changed Fingerprint sensor from External to Internal

3. Deleted the saved fingerprints.

When i logged on to Vista it started to work again, like magic. :)

For what it's worth, I found a pretty simple fix.

Just got my T500 two weeks ago. Everything worked great, then I went through the System Update process. As we now know, the fingerprint reader stopped working after that.

My fix was to download the latest fingerprint package from the Lenovo driver matrix. Upon running it, you should get a Repair or Remove option. I went through the removal process, rebooted, and then launched the package again and did a clean install.

Everything worked after that, and it even remembered all of my registered fingerprints, so nothing else dependent on the fingerprint system needed attention.

Hope this helps...

Exactly the same problem with my T400 -- worked fine until using the system update, now "Fingerprint System Not Available". Is Lenovo listening? This seems to be a common theme.

No, i don't think Lenovo is cares that much about the problems with the fingerprint system.
My solution on my W500 was to install Windows 7 and use the inbuilt feature for the fingerprint reader, and it works excellent.

Solution that worked for me....

.

"AuthenTec Fingerprint Service" windows service was stopped and set to Manual (probably User Error).

.

Once this service was restarted, fingerprint scanner worked fine - just like it did before - for years.
