How necessary/advisable is a clean install these days?

2017-03-01, 19:45 PM

I'm considering an IdeaPad so am wondering, in general, if Lenovo's Win10 builds are still loaded down with dozens of things (beyond drivers). In other words, how tight or sloppy is the default installation now?

I have no problem biting the bullet and doing a clean install early on (and installing drivers and *select* extras as appropriate), as opposed to weeks or months in when some kind of intractable problem caused by one or more of the extra goodies installed forces my hand, which seems to be the way these things can go.

It would be good to learn now what the sense is out there.

(I would include a Win10 "reset" in this conversation, but I know, because of the way Lenovo does recovery partitions, that that wouldn't result in a clean Win10.)

Less junk yes.  Usablility of One Key Recovery will sink your ship.

Order your machine and FORGET OKR exists.  Use windows backup and or/other(macrium).

(1)Move HDD to SSD okr broken.

(2)rearrange partitions, okr broken.

(3)Install win anniv(august 2015, updated november 2015),when your machine came with win 10 -2014. okr broken.

==

I would order your machine, with win 10 key in BIOS, and download windows 10 ANNIV  ISO from microsoft and go from there. None of this OKR slop and 8 partitions on the C drive HDD/SSD.  You KNOW exactly YOUR machine.  Your Lenovo support page SHOULD add the Vendor goodies.

=

You wont have to respond daily, OKR fails on my NEW lenovo Ideapad, what do i do?

Note: I do not respond to OKR failures, a waste of my time.

Wow, it's amazing that OKR is not written with major updates in mind, which I think is what you're saying. I wonder why it doesn't leverage W10's own Recovery feature, which certainly doesn't have the problem?  They could have done that and still loaded the recovery image with all the Lenovo extras. Why continue to reinvent the wheel?

Now that I have it, this is what's on a brand-new IdeaPad 510-15IKB:

D: (NTFS) 25599 MB (23636 MB free)
