Intel Online Connect

2018-08-09, 12:14 PM

I see it was now installed on my system (X1 Yoga 2nd gen).

How is it supposed to work or used? I'm missing something.

Hi. Thanks for your reply.

I did see those links before. But there's no information there about how is it supposed to work: PayPal doesn't even support 2FA anymore or if it does is well hidden. I also tried to set it up as a Security Key on Google (https://myaccount.google.com/signinoptions/two-step-verification) or Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/security/2fac/settings/) with no success. I tried in Edge, Firefox and Chrome.

Only hint of info I found is https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/7x6odd/got_t470s_anyone_actually_use_intel_online_connect/

To be honest, information is very lacking and I'm not even sure is working or not since I'm not sure how is it supposed to work.

I don't know much about Intel Online Connect so I asked one of our architects for a comment.

There is a U2F test site, please try this from Chrome:  https://demo.yubico.com/u2f

Unfortunately, there’s no test site that I’m aware of that tests the capability used by PayPal (which is called UAF).  Also unfortunately, PayPal doesn’t make this available to all users yet, so not everyone will see the option even if everything is configured correctly.  But, if it is available, you’ll see it in the Settings/Security section on the PayPal Web site:

Is this Intel online connect compatible with the Webauthn standard https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebAuthn or not?

Trying with fully updated T480 the latest Firefox and latest Chrome

Both give errors on the official test site: https://webauthn.org/ and some unofficial https://webauthn.io/

You do realize that releasing this if it does not work 100% reliable will cause several trust issues?

A warning to anyone who is using Microsoft's DirectAccess protocol for remote access: Intel Online Connect will break it. I've been investigating reports of issues from our ThinkPad users and eventually discovered this blog post:

Sure enough, after uninstalling Intel Online Connect, DirectAccess is working again.

We are checking with Intel.  It should be compatible with webauthn but I believe you when you say it's not.  We are asking Intel to check it and tell us how to make it work, if it is possible.

U2F Test site does not work for me. PayPal also does not show the web fingerprint login option. (Using T480, if that matters)

There will be announcement coming soon.  We are withdrawing Intel Online Connect due to this bug and other bugs that Intel seems unable to fix.  My advice is to uninstall it and move on.  Look for native FIDO2 support to be added to Windows 10 1809, then you can use Windows Hello to authenticate to those websites, rather than Intel Online Connect.
