Lenovo Sysupdate 5 stopped working on X220

2013-03-04, 6:10 AM
i am unable to get new update through Sysupdate 5. After I click on this option, I receive the following message: "An error occured while gathering user information." Could this be due to my having installed a Samsung 830 SSD after cloning to it my C:\programs and D:\data drives? I could remove Sysupdate5 using Control panel: Programs and Features. But then how do I get new Sysupdate?!

Re: Lenovo Sysupdate 5 stopped working on X220

I removed the Sysupdate I had (which was 5.0) and downloaded and installed from Lenovo Sysupdate. The install process did not go well but in the end it was installed. I still got the same error message "Error while gathering user information." So after some web search I went into the sysupdate folder and deleted all the log files, etc. I checked services.msc and my sysupdate is on manual (which is fine, as I do NOT want the thing to go off on its own!). I tried again to do the update and it would not work: again got the error message "Error while gathering user info." So I went in and checked the file tvsu_log_130305142204.txt. This is the gist of what it said: UDF download failed Unable to execute eGatherer Error getting the Egather parser Root element is missing System.xml.xmlexception at tvsu.egatherer.Egather Manager.getEgatherParser All the above resulted in the error message. So what is going on? How am I supposed to maintain my X220 properly with minimum effort. What is the use of Thinkvantage?

Did you just uninstall it, or did you delete the whole system update folder (\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\System Update)?

If you didn't delete the folder, try uninstalling  SU 5.02, delete the folder and try installing again.

I have SU 5.02 running fine on my X220, under Win 7 Ultimate x64.

Cheers,

Bill

Now I am in a fix. I forget the actual sequence now, but I deleted the entire systemupdate folder after I reinstalled Sys Update. I uninstalled Sys update, then reinstalled. Or, that is, tried to. Now when I run the installer, it does not complete the installation and I have no systemupdate folder. What a mess. How can I install system update again?

Make sure the System Update service has been removed by running services.msc.  If it has not, delete it using a Command Prompt window and the following command:  sc delete "System Update"

Do a reboot.

When you attempt the System Update install again, if it fails, look for an install log in your Temp folder and share that with us.

If you get it installed and you get the same error again, share the tvsu log file and we'll go from there.

I checked services.msc and found there System Update. But it was set on manual and was not started. Then I went as directed to the cmd prompt and typed in the command. The response was that there was no such service! I checked the Lenovo folder in programs (86) and did NOT find there any tvsu stuff. A search of the computer for "tvsu" also turned up nothing. Then I ran the installer again. It went through its paces but ended up telling me that the system update was not installed. I checked the Lenovo folder again and there was no system update folder and no tvsu logs. So, now I am stymied. What to do?
