Re: Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox 5.05.0009 - SSL problem

2014-04-22, 18:29 PM

Thanks for the replies.  I will try this in the next day or two and report back.

I can't try it today because I applied a workaround to this problem at our firewall side: I exempted download.lenovo.com from all UTM checks (SSL cert check, web filter, AV, etc.).  After that took effect I was able to get TVSU to work.  I have disabled this workaround now to do further testing.

Congrats on excellent response! Your documentation is excellent and your choice to "try" a workaround is again great. Could you state where you found the download for  Su 5.05.0009?

I was aware of the Hello level. That is downloaded (0 bytes) on the front end of SU running.

For my system, with su 5.05.0008,

it downloads:

C:\ProgramData\Lenovo\SystemUpdate\session\system\SSClientCommon\Hello_9_09_00.xml

For my system with su 5.03.0008.

it downloads:

C:\ProgramData\Lenovo\SystemUpdate\session\system\SSClientCommon\Hello_9_08_00.xml

==

Per the Su deployment guide (last issued is SU version 4), pages 16 and 18:

To disable SU auto update of itself,

Disable System Update Web upgrade (Update Thyself)

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Lenovo\SystemUpdate\Preferences\UCSettings\HTTPSHelloSettings

subfield Servername

System Update searches the Lenovo Help CenterWeb site for updates for itself, even if it is connected to a local

system or network share repository. You can disable the Web upgrade for System Update by clearing this value

.. blanks

.my value

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Lenovo\System Update\Preferences\UCSettings\HTTPSHelloSettings]

"ServerName"="https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/agent/"

I would expect hello level to xxx 10 .xxx xml has the same effect.

This is just FYI in case other users are following this post.

You can download  the original  5.03.0008 here, also:

http://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thinkvantage_en/systemupdate503-2013-10-31.exe

Summary:

It is all about accessing download.lenovo.com/???

.download.lenovo.com.  This request passes the firewall no problem <<< you state

>> probably the hello handshake

> then it burps after.

I am glad Lenovo USA and China responded so quickly.

Re: Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox 5.05.0009 - SSL problem

2014-04-25, 21:32 PM

Hi All,

I'm having the same trouble with 5.05.00008 (downloaded from lenovo..com) and 5.05.00009 (downloaded by System Update).  As directed, I uninstalled System Update 5.05, rebooted, installed systemupdate503-2013-10-31.exe from the link above, and finally changed the hello level in the registry.  5.03, starts up fine, does not try to update itself, and ... I get the same error, "There are no applicable packages found for your system."

I can live with this for a while.  I'm setting up a consumer-grade Lenovo desktop for my parents.  Any idea when this will get fixed?

Thank you,

David

Blarvitz,

I think you might  have a different issue then this user does. His issue is using a corporate network to reach download.lenovo.com,and his Firewall failed the connection  due  to missing cerfificates or similar . Are your running Su from a home ISP or across a corporate network?

Please find the SU log.  It is located here:

C:\Program Files(x86)\Lenovo\SystemUpdate\logs

tvsu_log.**date*. txt

You can upload the log  to www.dropbox.com and post the link to it here. The SU log is not easy to read.  If you pinpoint a error message area, just post 50 lines of the log here.  Note: the might be errors around the HELLO process is normal and should be ignored.

Also check your group policy permissions. I assisted a user in France who had to go into permissions and  FIPS settings.   Su failed when verifying the CRC on the download packages.

Thanks for the info on where you found SU xxxxx.09.  My SU has not offerred the self update yet, and yes xxxxx.08 is what shows on the download page.

The log file can be obtained from https://www.dropbox.com/s/cp3aqq7erckmqr3/tvsu_log_140425154159.txt

The entry in Group Policy editor is Disabled.

The hyperlink I gave you before has a period at the end.  So much for trying for appropriate grammar. Try this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cp3aqq7erckmqr3/tvsu_log_140425154159.txt

I've also corrected the original link.
