On Screen Display stopped working

2015-01-12, 0:08 AM

Hello,

I quite often face this problem, OSD just stops working. I decided to create this topic and share my error codes.

I know, there is on 99 % nobody from Lenovo who would try resolving this problem for ever... Personally I would give him a bottle of vine, just because he would be the one who solved this neverending issue in Windows 7...

Names of certain codes are translated from my language (czech), but I am sure that this could be deciphered by any sample of these codes in Win7.
  Problem event name:    BEX
  Application name:    TPONSCR.EXE
  Application version:    6.6.8.0
  Application time stamp:    54814dfa
Name of the error module:    ntdll.dll
Version of the error module:    6.1.7601.18247
Time stamp of the error module:    521ea8e7
  Exception shift:    00098519
  Exception code:    c000000d
  Exception data:    00000000
  OS version:    6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48
  ID national environment:    1029

What is your machine type and model? What operating system are you running? What version of Hotkey Feature do you have installed?

The latest version is 3.89.0100 released 12/23/2014. Is this the version you have installed?

If so, did the BEX errors show up with this install or have BEX errors been showing up all along?

Please do PROPERTIES on module TPONSCR.exe and state the Modified date and version number of module.

Yes, it is the latest.

Unfortunately, I don't know the contains of previous errors (I had been closing them immediately after they poped up). But last week, this fatal error happened maybe 5 times. Classic problem with "hidden OSD" appears quite very often. It is big difference from the previous IBM T41...

TPONSCR.EXE: last modified 5/12/2014, version 6.68

For the errors during the last 5 times or so, a entry should show up in Action Center.

control panel>action center>maintenance>view reliability history.

Click view all problem reports. Find a title for "tponxx.exec" or similar.

RIGHT click each entry, view technical details.

It should show a events log similar to your original post.

All we are looking for is: does each event log show a BEX error.

BEX is a buffer overflow exception.

Buffer overflow is a condition when some process tries to store data beyond the capacity of the fixed/available buffer so it tries to overwrite some other memory locations.... ie, A memory STOMP on memory the process does not own.

A hardware feature, call DEP, can also detect memory stomp and throw a BEX error.  A old KB article about DEP.

 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352

You can turn DEP off, but I would not recommend it.  The above article is just FYI.

==

(1)You recently installed latest Hotkeys version.  Is this when the BEX errors showed up?

(2) -or- have you been having BEX errors for several months?

If  the BEX errors related to TPONscr...exec are recent issues, I would suggest you uninstall current HOTKEYs and install an older version.

At the bottom of this link, you can choose an older hotkeys version to install.

If you are 3.89.0100, try 3.89.0000

It sounds like a known problem which we have fix for (but not yet released).

Could you please try this version (5.51.00)?

@

I've noticed this problem on my T420.  It looks like the X and the T run the same Hotkeys software so I'm giving it a try.

I'm not able to duplicate the problem prior to installing the new code.  I don't recall if the issue was 100% or random.

Do you know if the issue your download is intended to fix was consistent?  Any difference between manual hibernation (that I'm doing to test) and timed hibernation?

I'll run the new code for a while and see what happens.

BTW, the install complained that the files already in place were newer than the ones being installed.  Hmmm...

Thanks

Z.
