Power Manager "Cannot run on this system"

2009-07-02, 12:16 PM

I am unable to install any recent versions of Power Manager on my T61p (6459-CTO) with 64-bit Vista Ultimate SP2.  Each time I attempt installation I get the error message "Cannot run on this system".  Unless there is some conflict with recent Microsoft updates, I cannot see why Power Manager should be incompatible with my computer.

The problem started when TVSU updated Power Manager a few months ago (to version 2.42 I think), and Power Manager began to crash during startup or soon after.  In an attempt to fix the problem I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling both Power Manager and the Power Management Driver (I now have PM Driver version 1.53 installed), but nothing seems to work.  Note that this trouble started well before Vista SP2 was installed, when I was still running under Vista SP1.

I have tried installing each subsequent version of Power Manager since the 2.42 update, but the only version Power Manager that I can install is the orignal software that came preloaded by Lenovo on my hard disk (version 2.11).  That said, I cannot find any working links to try downloading earlier versions between 2.11 and the latest version 2.50.

Further, I am concerned that even Power Manager version 2.11 may not be working properly.  Battery has suddenly degraded in the last couple of months to less than 25% of its original capacity (and my machine is only 11 months old) - despite my setting Power Manager to automatically change charge threshholds to preserve battery lifespan.  Maybe this is normal, but batteries in my previous ThinkPads lasted at least a couple of years before the reaching this state, and their decline was more gradual.

I would really like to know how I can clear up this problem and get the latest version of Power Manager (2.50) installed and working properly - especially before I spend money on a new battery.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi woody-mag,

This Power Manager 2.50 download is working:

Try it and tell us what happens. I'm on and X61 Vista 64 SP2 with Power Manager 2.50 right now.

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

I don't know if it helps  but I couldn install the update named Bluetooth Advanced DataRate software on Vista 64 SP1 but after updating to SP2 all the updates installed fine. Otherwise I would advice using System Update because it installs other programs needed by the Power Manager - Hotkey Utility and Power Managment Driver. Maybe one of them is faulty.

Thanks to you and also Bananaman for the suggestions.  Unfortunately, they don't seem to work.

I already have Vista SP2 installed, and that does not seem to help this problem, which began while I was still on running SP1.

I have also installed the latest Hotkey Utility (versions 2.20.0001) and Power Management Driver (version 1.53), but still receive the same error when trying to install the most recent Power Manager (version 2.50):

"Cannot run on this system".

I would love to try TVSU (even though my troubles started after an automated update, which admittedly may only be coincidence).  However, I have a 64-bit operating system, which the latest TVSU (version 3.14) does not support.

Could the problem be that something in my .NET Framework files is corrupted?  I'm really fishing now.

Well, I have a 64-bit Vista Ultimate and TVSU 3.14 works fine. Since its prequisite is to have .NET framework 2.0 maybe it is it.

Sorry, I mis-stated the problem - TVSU (version 3.14) does not support Vista SP2.

That said, I am still inclined to think perhaps PM or another related utility required .NET Framework files that may have become corrupted on my computer.  It's the only other think I can think of at this point.

Thats the first time I hear about the problem but to clarify - I'm running Vista 64-bit Ultimate SP2 and TVSu runs fine. Maybe its that I installed it before updating to SP2. Anyway I found a thread that is suppose to fix SP2 issues (whatever they are) - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-72758
