Resetting permissions for backup folders on R&R?

2011-11-17, 3:11 AM

Apologies if this has been covered before, I searched around a bit and couldn't really find anything that covered it.

I've recently done a clean reinstall of my W520 to clear out bloatware. Before doing so I saved a backup through Rescue and Restore , double-checked and everything I wanted backed up was all in order. Reinstalled the OS with no problems, got my drivers all up to date, and reinstalled the Thinkvantage programs. R&R recognizes the backup from before the purge; the problem is that it won't allow me to actually extract anything from the My Documents/Pictures/Videos folders, which contain the bulk of the material I wanted backed up in the first place. Presumably because it thinks I'm a different user or something - it keeps telling me that 'access is denied' for those folders. I'm already running the computer as the administrator by default since I'm the only user, and there dosen't appear to be any option to run my backup drive as an admin. At the very least is there some other way I can explore/extract the backup drive's files?

Yeah, I'm trying to do it by individual folders. I figured that doing a full-on restore would defeat the purpose of me doing a clean installation.

I don't think there is another way, theres full restore & restore individual folders

I think there is an option in the recovery environment to just restore files maybe it will work from there

Re: Resetting permissions for backup folders on R&R?

Well yes, restoring individual folders is exactly what I'm trying to do.

The problem is that R&R isn't allowing me to restore those individual folders.

Assuming the 'recovery environment' is the R&R program itself, that's what I've been doing already.

I select the ''Restore Individual Files" option, select my backup, select the folders that I want to salvage, get an error message telling me that access is denied to those folders, then skips over them.

the pic above is from inside windows the recovery environment is a pre windows environment

another thing if you have a different version of R&R now than what you used to make the backup it may not work

Re: Resetting permissions for backup folders on R&R?

Pre-Windows was the exact same story. Tells me access is denied, skips them over.

I do believe it was backed up on R&R v.4.3. That's a problem in and of itself though since when I attempt to install that it gives me some kind of weird error saying 'This version of R&R can only be installed on select Lenovo computers'. Whatever the heck that's supposed to mean. The real kicker is if I select a full restore on R&R v4.5 it outright tells me that my backup was done on the older version and needs to revert back to 4.3 in order to work. So shouldn't that mean my computer is one of these 'select Lenovo computers'?

Next time I need to back up files I'm just dragging-and-dropping them onto the backup drive directly. This is becoming ridiculously convoluted.

I just use R&R to backup the OS one time, all my other data is copied toexternal HDD. I'm still on v4.3

you may have to do a full restore to get your files back, but I would do a backup first to external HDD or DVDs then restore get the files off loaded then restore back to what you have now

Re: Resetting permissions for backup folders on R&R?

Doing a full restore just gave me a BSOD.

At least now I know not to waste my time redownloading R&R now that I apparently have to reinstall everything AGAIN at the cost of all my photos and movies. Having a secure backup is pretty useless when it prevents you from restoring everything you wanted backed up on it in the first place.
