Restoring / recovering pre-install software.

2009-05-29, 20:00 PM

How do I recover preinstalled applications? I assume that this can be done with Rescue & Recovery, but I don't see an option for that. I don't want to guess and play around with it and accidentally overwrite the hard drive with a fresh install.

I've had this issue before, where I wanted to recover some app that came with the system, but that the user had uninstalled for whatever reason.

Specifically in this case, I want to recover the Lenovo Office 2007 Professional Trial. The download trial does not work with the Lenovo OEM Office 2007 licenese keys.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

The preinstalled apps normally are located in C:\SWTOOLS\APPS. Except on my T500 Vista 32 preload 5 applications were in C:\Program Files\MLPS\apps instead.

Looked in both SWTOOLS and MLPS but see no Office trial.

T500: Vista 32, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 15.4" 1680x1050, 500GB 7200rpm, ATI Radeon HD3650 + Intel 4500MHD. T42: XP, 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, 14.1" 1024x768, 250GB PATA, ATI Radeon 7500.

Yeah, I couldn't find a sign of it either. Even more annoying is that it's also not on the recovery disks that you create yourself.

Your only option for recovering it is to re-image the system using Rescue and Recovery. This is not a very pleasant option because of course you then have to back everything up and re-install everything else from scratch plus restore your user data.

I don't know why it's such a big deal to include ALL pre-installed software in one directory that can be copied to a CD/DVD backup.

Especially since the Office install is a trial version anyway. You have to convert it using your seperately purchased license key.

I've got a case going with Lenovo on this, but we'll see where it goes. I'm anticipating getting the "sorry, you're SOL" reply, but we'll see.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. The link you listed is a great resource to have. I wish Microsoft and Lenovo would make it easier to find. I'm bookmarking it for future reference.

Unfortunately, it didn't resolve my issue. My license key(s) all fail the check on that page with

We are sorry, but we are unable to complete your request. The following problem(s) exist:
  • The product key you’ve entered does not appear to be a valid key for this program. This program is only for Medialess licence kits – not standard retail products.
  • The product could not be found.

This makes me think there is some issue with Microsoft's license database for the Lenovo OEM medialess license kits. The licenses are valid as they all activate fine and also pass Genuine Advantage.

I did however use the support link on that page to send a message to MS support. hopefully something will come of that.

I'll keep at it. Thanks again for the response and the link. It will be useful in the future I'm certain.

I just stumbled on this thread and passed the MS link on to a friend who was struggling with this.  It rescued him.  Thanks GMAC-R60.

He did find that he had to enter the ket in ALL CAPS.  Lower case, which works during the product installation, would fail with the "invalid key" error.

Any chance this is what is tripping you up?

Just a WAG,

Z.
