Re: Seagate Momentus XT + ThinkVantage Toolbox = Crash

The SR23 update did not address the problems exposed by LTT. Another firmware update is in the works.

Re: Seagate Momentus XT + ThinkVantage Toolbox = Crash

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to chime in with my $0.02 and report that I've had crashing problems on my Thinkpad T60p wiht a 500G 7200RPM Seagate Momentus XT drive and 64-bit Windows 7 Professional.  I finished installing Windows last night and started encountering the problems today.

I seem to be having the same sets of problems with the computer becoming unresponsive save for the mouse at times but then coming back to life.  I happened to run the ThinkVantage Tools today and got the complete lockup followed by a blue screen of death.  Fortunately I don't seem to have suffered any data corruption as I went Googling for the problem on my other computer immediately and then uninstalled the toolbox right away.

I'm hoping to see that firmware upgrade from seagate.  Will there be an official announcement on these forums about it?  Should I look to Seagate somewhere to track whether the firmware update is available?

I've been tempted to remove this 500G HD and put in a 5400RPM WD 500G HD and just deal with the slower (but presumably more stable!!!) performance as that last thing I want to deal with is a machine where I'll lose data.  Has anyone else had problems with this drive save for the ThinkVantage Toolbox?

RoboDev:  do some searching/reading of this forum, and you'll see that there are some general problems (hangs/freezes/crashes) with this drive, and also a specific crash problem with running Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox.  The general problems have mostly been fixed by a recently released Seagate firmware update (SD23), as discussed previously.  The LTT problem is expected to be fixed by a subsequent/pending firmware update.  No ETA on that, but you can read and follow progress over here:

Thanks Steve.

Just updated my drive to SD23.  I'll report back if I have any weird issues with it.

Does anyone know if the Lenovo Toolbox has an underlying process running in the background? I'm asking because I still had BSOD after upgrading to the new SD23 firmware which where obviously related to the hard disk (kernel_data_inpage_error & ntfs.sys).

Since I uninstalled the LTT some days ago, I haven't had those crashes anymore. But I'm still not sure as they have been very sporadically anyway.

I don't know about LTT but I do know that without LTT and with the SD23 firmware my machine has been running great for several weeks now.

I'm at the point of doing some subjective comparison tests against Seagate Momentus 7200.4 drive and to be honest with Windows 7 preload I'm finding them to feel very similar.

I may end up reverting to the  7200.4 for good because it uses less power.

I remember LTT has schedule task to check the hardware every month.
Maybe this is why you got BSOD.

Before seagate release new firmware to fix this issue, it's better to uninstall LTT.

We released an update to LTT on August 20th. Among the changes in this release, we added a workaround for the Momentus XT issue so the system will no longer crash when LTT queries the drive. Please note that the problem still exists in the drive so other utilities may cause a crash. Seagate will be releasing a firmware update to address the root of the problem.

I just went to http://web.lenovothinkvantagetoolbox.com/index.html to download the newest version of the software, and the installer crashes about halfway through. I was also having the same issues with the Momentus XT 500GB drive. I did not see a newer version of the software on the support and downloads page on Lenovo's site, so I assume that this was the only way to get the aforementioned newer version.

cajunbob,

Could you provide more details about the installer crash? What was it doing? Were there any error messages onscreen?
