Re: System Update: Package Index Server temporarily unavailable

So you're saying it's high usage that's been preventing me from downloading updates every single time that I've tried in the last 24 hours?  If that is the case if I keep trying will I get on  ???  Because I'm not seeing that behaviour.

EDIT:  OK now it's working on 3 of my systems, I am currently downloading updates.  BUT here's the million dollar question...when I just called Lenovo Business Partner support they had no idea there was any issue.  Why does one Lenovo employee have information on a known outage but the callcenter doesn't?  I smell a gap in communication.

I am using Windows Vista and the "Indexing Service" was unistalled by the system.  I had to re-install the service, restart the service and then restart the "Update Retriever" to get it to work.:smileywink:

A note about "System Update".  We have been using system update since its inception from IBM.  We have had very good success with about 75 laptops during that time frameframe.  With a good Internet connection I have rarely found that I could not get a system updated.  Most of our problems have either been individual system, Internet or Windows problems.

Well, I tried again this morning and got "You have downloaded x.xx MB of x.xx MB..." then the download completed and everything went without a hitch for the download process!

Re: System Update: Package Index Server temporarily unavailable

Hello!

I just want to share this in case someone else is experiencing the same problem.

I got the error message "Package Index Server är inte tillgänglig just nu. Försök igen lite senare." which is "The Package Index Server is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later" localized in Swedish.

I checked the logs under "C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\logs\"
The logs are in the format "tvsu_log_<date><time>.txt"

And in the log i found this error:
Message: Fail to write the file:
Could not find file 'C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\session\QuestResponse.xml'.

The solution for me was to remove the read only property on the "C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\session\" folder and sub folders.

Right-click on the "session" folder
Click "Properties"
Click on "General" Tab
Deselect the "Read-only" check box
Click on "Ok"
Click on "Ok"

//Olle

I do not think the issues are PC related.  We use the update retriever and then point all our systems to the local server.  They all work fine.  Update retriever on the other hand is experiencing the same issues 'the package Index Server is temporary unavailable....'  this only started happening when I updated it to version 2.14.

I even went as far as to install it clean on a diff server to make sure it was not my server and again got teh same error.  This happens no matter what type of prosy setting I use and if I bypass the proxy I still get it.

The indexing server is running on my 2003 server where this app has been working for a long time until now.

Now on my 2008 server update retriever fails and so does system updater unless I point it to my local server, except for today of course.

Re: System Update: Package Index Server temporarily unavailable

Hello,

I have a T60 and I had yesterday the same problem with rerun07. I made this change in the registry but after reboot the value of this entry comes back to a strange TP_7I____ value. So each time I want to make a system update i have to go and change the  \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\ACPI\DSDT\LENOVO\  value. Is there any other way to lock this value to be the correct one?

HI Mark,

I installed "Update Retriever" in my compnay to fetch all updates for all "my" computers. I tried several times zu fetch the packages from the package index server; it failed mostly (not every time) -- maybe because there are no download-slots free for me. I found this thread where are many companion in misfortune are...

I need help as many of us and maybe I can help: I will offer a mirror-server for your server(s) -- So I will get _all_ files and give them to the world using http/ftp.  I offer up to 1 gbit/s and some (how many?) gb of disk space!

If you agree, it would help me and some others :-)

Thanks in advance for a reply,

Martin

Re: System Update: Package Index Server temporarily unavailable

After a few hours of trial and error I was able to stop the error from coming up.  What I ended up doing was trying every type and OS config one at a time and keeping track of what the results were in a spreadsheet.  First I did it at home so there was NO proxy or firewall in the way.  Once I returned to the office I tried it again.  Here are my results, so far UR has worked EVERY time since I made my changes.  I will post my spreadsheet next, apparently it puts me over 20,000 char.
