I am using a 1-week-old W510 with USB 3.0 support. I have a 500GB USB drive which is the same size as the internal disk. When I open the ThinkVantage Backup & Restore options in advanced mode to set everything up, I see the option to select USB External Device as the option to backup to this destination, however, it doesn't seem to let me choose specifically WHICH of my external drives to use.

How can I choose which of 5 drives are connected through a USB hub to use as the backup destination? This doesn't seem apparent and the training module previously mentioned does not answer this question.

Also, if that one backup drive is the only one plugged in, the Backup Utility says "unknown" when I select USB Drive from the drop down box. Is there a specific way the drive needs to be formatted/partitioned? I haven't been able to find any documentation on this thus far.

Hi ashworth,

Unlike other backup/imaging programs where you can specify a path to place your backup, using R&R to backup to an external hard drive is very specific and limited. Lenovo should clarify this in their documentation. Basically by selecting "external hard drive" the assumption is that you are using one external hard drive exclusively for your Thinkpad. By simplifying the process to make it dummy proof, Lenovo gave up some flexibility in terms of  methodology. (they should fix this and allow one to specify a path similar to setting up R&R for a network)

If you set up your hub with five external drives like you originally had it, does R&R find the drive and last backup? If so then you may be stuck with this configuration unless you delete the backup and start all over again using one external hard drive connected to your laptop.

Let me know how you go.

  1.  I've never backed up before. This is a one-week old notebook.

  2.  I'm not sure if the drive needs to be partitioned and formatted a certain way. I unplugged all drives except for this new backup drive and left it as the only plugged-in drive external of the machine. When I choose the USB option it shows "unknown" instead of an available size, so something's weird there.
As of today, I installed Acronis TrueImage Home 2010 and am setup to use incremental backups using its solution. The backups are quickly done and resonably sized, encrypted with AES 256-bit encryption and password protected. The full + incremental feature is pretty sweet too and it let me choose to backup all three (default) partitions on the internal disk.
Happy to test different scenarios and try some things if it will help others on this forum though, however, I agree...Lenovo needs to truly make the advanced area "advanced"....simpler features are for the default area, not us advanced pros. I mean seriously...I have two computer science degrees. Let me choose my destination :)

Re: Thinkvanatge Rescue and Recovery

I recently purchased a Western Digital My Passport portable external hard drive; plugged it into my laptop and R&R recognised the drive without any problem. But I was using R&R ver 4.21 with XP as the operating system.

Since your laptop is only a week old, I'll assume you are running Win 7 with R&R ver 4.3; so perhaps some one on this forum with this setup can assist you.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with Acronis, its stable and very easy to use. But if I had just purchased a Thinkpad and R&R didn't work out of the box; I'd be pretty ticked off. Maybe you should give Lenovo support a call to determine what the problem is and to ensure nothing else is wrong with the computer. For example, when I purchased my X200, the built in camera didn't work. A support call to Lenovo Australia, led to them replacing the camera.  They provided excellent support.

Maybe this issue has something to do with R&R and USB 3?

Can someone confirm?

Well, no one seems to know the answer to this. Anyways.

When I direct the backup to an external USB HD i noticed that the Rescue and Recovery system format the disk before it save the backup. My conclusion is therefore that you must have one external harddrive to each mashine you would like to backup...(?)
