Thinkvantage Toolbox update is broken (5/2/2011, 6.0.5802.25)

2011-05-02, 23:19 PM

Today, I received a notification (from the TVT icon in the Windows toolbar) that an update was available (for my TP-T410 running Windows 7 64-bit).  I accepted the update.  During installation, it popped up a command prompt window, which had an error.  After installation, when I try to run TVT, it displays an error and then the splash screen goes away, but the program won't start.  I could uninstall TVT, but the only version available to re-install from the Lenovo website is the version I had BEFORE the upgrade:

Screenshots of the installation and the runtime errors are available at the link below.  Thanks.

@green5178,

Try uninstalling the Toolbox then install the one below.

Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox Update PROBLEM

2011-05-03, 19:30 PM

Greetings! I received notification of an update for the Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox yesterday.  So, I elected to update from my current version, 6.0.5717.35, to the listed update version, 6.0.580.25.  The download began but then stopped.  I restarted the download and, after a few minutes, it stopped again.  This happened several times until the download was complete.

Upon completion of the download, the installation process began.  Unfortunately, the update produced an unusable ThinkVantage Toolbox.  So, I attempted to reinstall by downloading the version online; it is interesting to note that this version is listed as 6.0.580.24. Prior to installing the download version, I checked that I had the must-have version of MS Net Framework -- I did.  The installation began but produced SEVERAL problems with requests to skip overwriting SEVERAL files.  After this installation, I still had an unusable, inoperable ThinkVantage Toolbox!  This, of course, was very disappointing.

I was glad that the updated corrupt ThinkVantage Toolbox did not affect Rescue and Recovery:  I used Rescue and Recovery to recover my original ThinkVantage Toolbox.

After having to update Windows with all the Windows 7, Microsoft, and MS Office updates since my last backup, I found that Norton Internet Security had been affected (an unistall/reinstall took care of this) and my fingerprint reader driver had been corrupted (an uninstall and plug-and-play reinstall took care of this). It seems that trying to recover from what should be a simple update of the Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox software was not simple but, luckily, doable.

So, it seems that I am, hopefully, back to my original state after a lot of wasted time!  While I am interested in updating my Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox software, I refuse to go through all this again.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem?  I have never had download disruptions.  So, is this typical of Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox updates?  Or, is there a problem with the Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox update?

Any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!  : )

@All,

Tested on a T400 x64 Win 7 SP1.

1. Press blue button
2. Received notification to update from 6.0.5717.37 to 6.0.5802.25.
3. Press download
4. Press install
5. Took about 5 minutes to install.
6. Installation done.
7. Close TVT
8. Open TVT -> OK.
9. Reboot
10. Open TVT -> OK.

Try uninstalling the TVT, reboot, then download the latest one via Lenovo support page and see if it works.

@All,

The Lenovo Support site is only showing the 6.0.5802.24 where as the TVT will prompt to download 6.0.5802.25.

Am checking with the website team on it.

I had the same problem with the exact same errors yesterday.  I also tried downloading the file directly bypassing the system update but the link was broken.  I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on a W510.

I had the same problem with the update failing, and then the download link at Lenovo being broken. However, as of Wednesday evening (European time) the link was OK and the re-installation was successful.
