Thinkvantage rescue and recovery

I am trying to recover files from an old Rescue and Recovery backup to my Thinkpad W510. The OS is Win 7 and R&R backup was in Win 7.

The backup comprises 38 DVD discs plus another 3 labelled Final Q, Final SP and Final C. It looks like the Final C disk is either corrupt or did not write

Is there any way of recovering data from this backup or doing a complete recovery?

Thanks in anticipation.

Re:Thinkvantage rescue and recovery

Hello Gryphonr183 and welcome to community forums!

I'm sorry to hear about the issue you're experiencing with your Rescue and Recovery backup. It can be quite challenging when a backup disc is corrupt or does not write properly.

Unfortunately, if the Final C disc is corrupt or did not write, it may not be possible to recover the data from it. However, you might still be able to recover some data from the other discs.

I would recommend trying to use a different disc drive to read the Final C disc, as sometimes certain drives can read discs that others cannot. If this doesn't work, you might want to consider using a professional data recovery service.

For future backups, you might want to try the Lenovo Migration Assistant:

I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.

Best regards,

Re:Thinkvantage rescue and recovery

Thanks Jwes_Lenovo,

tried using a second CD/DVD drive as you suggested. I looks like the Final C is blank, i.e. unwritten.

I will do as you suggest and see a professional data recovery service.

Thanks for your advice.

Re:Thinkvantage rescue and recovery

Hello again Jwes_Lenovo,

re the above, I took all the backup discs to a computer recovery specialist and it is now certain that noting was written to the Final C disc which must contain info including the ecryption key to the backup. We tried using Final C form a later backup but that did not work.

It seems strange to me that the restoration of the backup relies soley upon this disc. Is there any other way we can recover the Final C data.

FYI examination of the disc indicates that there has never been anything written to this disc, i.e. no recoverable files.

Final question before I dump these discs.

Thanks again.

Re:Thinkvantage rescue and recovery

Unfortunately, if the disc is blank and no data was ever written to it, there may not be a way to recover the data that was supposed to be on it.

The Rescue and Recovery backup process is designed to create a complete backup of your system, including the encryption key. If a disc in the set is missing or unwritten, it can indeed make the recovery process difficult or impossible.

Before you dispose of the discs, you might want to consider reaching out to a different data recovery specialist for a second opinion. Sometimes, different experts might have different methods or tools that could potentially recover some data.

I'm sorry I couldn't provide a more positive answer.
