Vantage Custom battery charge threshold

2018-02-14, 7:23 AM

I've checked the "Custom battery charge threshold" option but the machine won't stop charging once it reaches the upper limit (70%) (plugged in, not charging). The charging works when below (65%) (plugged in, charging). I would imagine the battery would discharge if it was not charging but it doesn't, it remains at 70%. I thought the battery would charge to 70%, stop charging, then discharge to 65%, then charging would be triggered and the cycle would repeat itself over and over ...

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi tony06,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Battery threshold is working correctly as per design, If your battery threshold is set on Max 70% and Min 65% then battery charging will be stop on 70% but battery percentage will not reduce until and unless you will not remove adapter, If you will connect any Lenovo system with adapter then it will take all power from adapter only and saving battery energy, once you will disconnect charging adapter then only battery is getting activate for power supply.

Lenovo Vantage Battery Charge Threshold is working properly. But after one day or some time, the threshold settings are automatically disable/unchecked. Why its automatically disable/unchecked? I have Lenovo ThinkPad T570.

the issue is, it's a fallacy that to fully charge the battery all the time and to keep it between 40 and 80% is the best way to ensure long life. same as charging it and em,ptying it three times first is also a false belief. And anyway, nobody wants to have their charge limited to 60% in the days of pc makers bragging how many mw of power their batteries have, and hours of use! we want 100% charge when we pick up the device, not 60% throttling!
dumb stuff and fake 'optimisation' of a bloatware app. Absolutely stupid feature

It should discharge to 65% in your example, what Ashish_Lenovo says is wrong. See a thread I just started. My laptop was always working by the algorithm you expected and suddenly it stopped working like this. The algorithm explained by Ashish_Lenovo as "correct" and "by design" overheats and kills battery.

Hi @sakyant

The charging of Lithium-Ion batteries when the level is higher than 80% or lower than 20% causes a bit of internal damage that reduces the battery durability with each charge. This is not specific to Lenovo, all Li-Ion batteries are affected.

Lenovo lets you set custom charge/discharge thresholds so the user can set what fits their usage instead of forcing everybody to what they want. Properly set thresholds reduce battery wear over time.

Road warriors who have batteries paid for by the company might want 100% all the time with higher wear but longer run-time, while people who are using the laptop always plugged-in would use 40%/50% thresholds (like I do) to minimize wear. Simply turn off the custom thresholds when longer run-time is needed.

I consider this Custom thresholds features a valuable feature to reduce unneeded battery wear, and reduce costs related to bad batteries.

Martin.

I believe you misunderstood what was written. What was likely meant in this old thread is that once the charging is reached, charging stops and the device uses power from the power adapter. The battery will not charge, and will discharge only due to battery chemistry reasons and if the device needs more power than what is provided by the power adapter. In that regard, @Ashish_Lenovo correctly described the current operation of the thresholds, although it was not crystal clear the way it was written.

As a data point, my thresholds are set to 40%/50% and my ThinkPad P52 isn't charging. The battery falls to 40% before charging to 50%.

Note that this limit is set by software running on your machine, and booting an operating system that isn't configured with thresholds could bypass them.

Are battery loading stoped at 100% in total when the power is connected! Before it stoped loading at 60% to save lifetime. Whats the difference?
