Want to Reset My PC, but don't want to lose Dolby Audio (Windows 10)

Hi, everyone. I am on a Lenovo Flex 3-1580 running Windows 10, and my Windows 10 installation does not perform as well as it used to. It works okay, but sometimes it overwhelms my hardware, and it always takes a long time to start up from a cold boot. I've done all the standard things (Disk Cleanup, Defragmentation, uninstalling unused programs, reducing startup programs, running antivirus scans, check disk, DISM, etc.), to no avail. I am seriously considering using the Reset My PC feature. However, I am concerned about not being able to reinstall Dolby Audio, because although I found it in the Microsoft Store, it says in the description:

"Windows 10 PC Support Notice:

This application is designed specifically for PC Manufacturers and comes pre-installed on licensed devices. It will not function properly on unlicensed devices."

So, my question is, how does the Dolby license work? Is it stored somewhere on the OS partition, so I would lose it if I did a reset? Or, is the license embedded in another piece computer's hardware (much like the Windows 10 OEM license) and therefore I would not lose the Dolby license by resetting? The ability (or lack thereof) to retain Dolby Audio is a crucial factor in my decision to reset Windows, because I have hearing problems, and Dolby Audio vastly improves my multimedia experiences. Therefore, if there is even a possibility of losing Dolby, then I will not go forward with the reset.

I also posted this question on answers.microsoft.com (click here), and a guy there said that I could do a "Repair Upgrade" I looked that up,(groovypost.com) and I'll go with it if a full reset would mess up Dolby, however, I really want as fresh of a start as possible, so if someone here could answer my original question about the Dolby license, I would really appreciate it.  :-)

Re:Want to Reset My PC, but don't want to lose Dolby Audio (Windows 10)

Hi cmptrworm01001,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The Flex 3 1480/1580 has a One Key Recovery function through the use of the Novo Button.  See the hardware manual on page 27. This feature will help restore the computer back to it's factory settings (how it came out of the box) or you can use it to recover the computer back to a previously backed up point.

If you factory reset/restore it through this function, it should reinstall everything as it was when you first got the device, with the pre-installed licensed software.

In the very unlikely event it does not, then you should be able to download and install the software from the Support Page for your device under Drivers & Software, Manual Update then the Audio and/or Software & Utilities section.

Regards

Voithos

Re:Want to Reset My PC, but don't want to lose Dolby Audio (Windows 10)

UPDATE: I made a backup system image with Macrium Reflect, and then did the reset. All of the drivers, including Dolby Audio appeared to remain on the system, although they reverted to outdated versions and needed to be updated. I then made a backup image of the reset system, and decided to try a clean install, because I felt that Reset had not thoroughly cleaned up everything, and the boot time was still too long. After the clean install, Windows automatically installed most of the drivers I needed, except for the audio driver. So I went to my OEM's website, and manually downloaded and installed the audio driver, and it turns out that Dolby Audio is bundled in with the audio driver package. So, Voithos, you were correct about the drivers being available on the Lenovo Support website. In short, everything turned out well. Also, after the clean install, Windows 10 starts up on my HDD 3x faster than before.
