Re: anyone having trouble with updater 5? to someotherguy. to graham

I got new SU 5.00.0018 from Chinese Lenovo web site,

http://driver.zol.com.cn/link/45/444239.shtml

You may get Lenovo_systemupdate_5.00.0018.zip.

Save it on disktop and extract Lenovo_systemupdate_5.00.0018.exe.

Click it double to execute and follow it's instruction.

If you feel it hunging up, move dialog right or left, another dialog will appear.

On the previous version, you can keep installation history to answer "no",

but on this new version all history may be lost.

The new SU works fine !!   My PC is W510, Win7 pro 64bit.

"SystemUpdate" service is installed and it's startup is set as manual.

"SystemUpdate" service starts up when SU is executed, and it stops when SU is closed.

You can download the new SU from above URL.

It shoud be your own risk.

I installed the System Update 5 on Windows 8 from elsewhere (the installed files except logs are the same as the autoupdated ones I have in Windows 7 image), however it does not work for Windows 8 now, it tries to fetch catalog file named [type]_Win8_DESC.xml, but it 404's. The file [type]_Win7_DESC.xml is present on the server, so it looks like the Windows 8 support was removed on servers.

(Not to mention that I got my SU4 on Windows 7 autoupdated to version 5 and it worked. I read the release notes where it was stated that Win 8 is supported. So I finally got to reinstall the system to Windows 8, only to find out from the new system that the version 5 vanished from Lenovo site with no info...)

Hello did install sucessfilly 5.0.0018

Installation did tell me that it must remove the old version. I was asked to keep old files, I says yes, in the hope to keep the history. New Version is functional! I have a W520 WIN7Pro

ALL UPDATE HISTORY IS LOST!

Interesting.  I tried this, but failed to check on whether the 5 I was running was different from 5.0018.  At any rate, I downloaded and installed successfully, but this one still doesn't do anything useful on my Windows 8 64 bit rtm system.  It runs to about 16% of the download and quits.

Re: anyone having trouble with updater 5? 5.00.0019 has been released.

2012-10-16, 6:14 AM

SU 5.00.0019 HAS BEEN RELEASED.

If you search "systemupdate 5" via Google, etc., you may reach Lenovo web site like attached picture.

This page is linked to old version, 5.00.0001, and may cause some problem on some models.

Click above "Drivers & Software", then specify your PC.  You will reach another update list.

"ThinkVantage Technology" tab contains SystemUpdate, 5.00.0019.

I had installed 5.00.0018 from China Lenovo site.  It worked fine.

Today, I installed 5.00.0019.  This is working fine.

This new version may no longer need "System Update" service.

I think SU 5 may lose update histry which is kept by SU 4.

My OS is ThinkPad Edge 14 Windows 7 (64-bit).
Yesterday, Oct 15, 2012, I installed ThinkVantage System Update 5.00.0019 (systemupdate50-09-27-2012) Released Oct 09, 2012 and it runs perfectly.
As previously mentioned, all previous update history was lost.
The name of the file for ThinkVantage System Update 5.00.0019 is systemupdate50-09-27-2012.
Here is URL/Link for the page I got when I Googled "ThinkVantage System Update 5.00.0019":
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS012808
Here is the Direct Download URL/Link: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/thinkvantage_en/systemupdate50-09-27-2012.exe

Re: anyone having trouble with updater 5? 5.00.0019 has been released.

Thanks.  I uninstalled 5.0018, downloaded and installed 5.0019 and verified that version was running.

No change in my symptoms--runs to about 16% then says no updates available for my system.

I have 5.x running on a number of Windows 7 machines, and apparently working correctly--i.e. it sometimes offers new updates.  So far, not so on my only Windows 8 machine,

Bill

The update catalog for Windows 8 is simply not present on the server, try visiting this in your browser (it is the file that System Update downloads at around 17%):

https://download.lenovo.com/catalog//(type)_Win8_DESC.xml

and this:

https://download.lenovo.com/catalog//(type)_Win7_DESC.xml

Substitute (type) with four digits of your machine type, without parentheses (see here http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-49QTT6 and click on "ThinkPad and Value Line notebooks" to see how to find it). The Win7 catalog is available, the Win8 catalog is not.

So, although the new System Update supports Win8 and there are new final (non-beta) drivers for Win8, e.g., for W520, the System Update servers do not contain update catalog in order to install them...

Thanks - that makes excellent sense, and I'll try your workaround!

OK - done the test, and see that there is one for 7 and none for 8.

Will stop pushing buttons and wait to see if it works in a couple of weeks!

Thanks again
