ERROR occured when update the ""Rescue and Recovery 4.2""......

dear all, i'm a newbie with the TP notebook, and i'm a chinese , sorry for my POOR english !!

hope you all will understand what i explain now......

i just buy a T61 last nite, but when i try to "UPDATE" my system, two error message shown to me.........

Error 25013: Error obtaining the Rescue and Environment drive letter
Error 25012: Error accessing the Rescue and Recovery service partition

at last, i can't finish the "Rescue and Recovery UPdate" anyway !!

and i've try to download the "Rescue and Recovery 4.2" from the web manually, but got the same error occured !!

anyone try before ?

pls help me to solve the problem !!

P.S. because i just buy my T61 within 24 hrs, i'm so worry about this !!

I've been having this same problem, having been unable to update R&R for several months now (T60p, windows XP, both the tvtrnr42_1511en.exe file downloaded directly and via using TV's own System Update).

The recovery partition is there and works fine when booting into it with the blue Thinkvantage button.  My first instinct is "duh, of course you can't find a drive letter for that partition, it's a hidden partition that's not mounted!  Stupid installer."  but this has always been the setup for R&R, and previous updates worked happily.

So I'd like to turn this question around.  Has anyone sucessfully installed this update?  Did you have to unhide the R&R partition or do some other trick?

No, I have not been able to either.  I delayed because I didn't have SP1 yet, but I tried it through Lenovo Update first and it didn't work.  Then I went to the site and Dld the file to my desktop.  (Dang near laughed my butt off when it had automatic instructions to "Search Everywhere" to find the file.  How about, "Be sure to remember where you DLd the file.")  Tried running it from the desktop and got "Patch Install Error:  There are no more files"  I was hoping for some hope here.  I'll see what else is out there.

I had the same problem as you after reimaging my system, but I was able to resolve it after some poking around.  I don't know which of these two fixed it, but this is what I did:

1. Reboot
2. When the ThinkPad splash screen appears, press the blue ThinkVantage button to enter the R&R workspace
3. Once inside the R&R workspace, shut down
4. Remove whatever device is in your Ultrabay slot (DVD, second HDD) before booting; I have a second hard drive
5. Boot into Windows
6. Run the R&R install program (C:\SWTOOLS\APPS\rnr42en\) or System Update

I suspect that maybe by loading the RNR workspace, it 'found' the recovery workspace.  Of course, if you don't have the service partition (one of the reasons I had to reimage in the first place), this won't work, but if it is a new machine, the service partition will be there. 

Anyhow, that fixed it for me.  Let us know if this helps.

Good idea!  No luck though, although my R&R partition is still healthy and boots nicely.  I'm wondering if the solution wasn't actually the removal of your second hard drive.  Other threads discuss how getting rid of network shares helped similar problems, as R&R wanted to use drive letters that were already taken by network drives.  Me, I've got an "F:" that's my swap partition and a "G:" that's my fat32 partition.  If the R&R upgrade program is hardcoded to mount the hidden partition as "F:" (for example), rather than trying to dynamically grab the first available drive letter, I could understand what was going on.

I'd unmount my F and G partitions if I knew how to do so in windows, but don't know of an nondestructive way to do this.

With a specific idea like this my normal (linux) next step would be to go read the source and find out if that really is the problem.  Can't do that in this case unfortunately, but if a Lenovite happens to be reading this forum and can direct me to the proper place to submit a real bug report, I'll do so.  Can only find service call info on the website, which doesn't help to submit a bug.

A full install package is available on the Lenovo Support site which addresses a SP1 issue in Rescue and Recovery. Also, a patch is available through Thinkvantage System Update

I had the same problem. I disconnected all the network drives, and other logical drives I had created. Rebooted and then installed successfully.

The latest version I've been able to find on the support site is 4.20.0511.00 from last December, and that's the one I've never been able to apply.

Will try to unmount my extra partitions with Partiion Magic and see if that helps.

Oops, forgot to update this, but no luck.  Got other partitions all unmounted, and R&R still wouldn't update.

In some cases it may be that R&R cannot see the \RRBackups folder. If you cannot see your backups nor make a new one then that will be confirmed. In my case attempting a backup (which failed) + plus accessing service partition to initiate after new install of 4.2 had some effect as the patch then worked.
