Re: Lenovo System Update repository

Hi Guys

I have been playing around with System Update and Update Retriever. Haven't been going in blind, went through the manual

On the Update Retriever i have created an System entry for my specified Lenovo device and changed the Repository Path to a specified location, eg: (\\IT\LenovoTest). I have a pc lets say its called TestPC01, have System Updates installed and specified in registry to have RepositoryLocation1 changed from default to \\IT\LenovoTest

I if were to run System Update manually on TestPC01, i can see that it works perfectly. TestPC01 will fetch all the downloaded updates on Update Retriever and i can also see that it is retrieving it from \\IT\LenovoTest. Awesome

Now i want to test scheduling an update. I created a task schedule to run "C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\System Update\tvsu.exe" with the following arguments:

\SCHEDULER \SchedulerAbility = YES \SchedulerLock = SHOW \SearchMode = ALL \NotifyOptions = NOTIFY \Frequency = WEEKLY \RunOn = WEDNESDAY \RunAt = 12:36:00

My question is, when where does the task schedule pull its update from? Will it still pull it from the specified Repository Location on the registry (\\IT\LenovoTest)? If it does, for some reason it does not seem to be fetching everything. Screenshots as below:

As you can see, the Manual Update is fetching both the Recomended Updates and Optional Updates where the Auto Update isn't

What can i do or change to make them the same?

Thanks for your time

Re: Lenovo System Update repository

The deployment guide is outdated.

For combos that work, set schedule in TVSU.

Then go to windows task scheduler for run parms.

It is is in TVT folder.

Re: Lenovo System Update repository

Hi sclexman,

Thanks for the reply, really appreciate this

Just to clarify some things you suggested

  1. Disable the Task Scheduler i created and re-create another under the TVT folder?
  2. Are the arguements i used correct? do i need to change it?
  3. Setting the schedule in TVSU only provides options for Critical and Recommended. How do i get Optional updates as well? via the arguments?
  4. If it is not too much to ask, can you provide me some screenshots of what needs to be changed? please

Sorry for asking so much, I am a total novice still in the learning process

Regards

Re: Lenovo System Update repository

Hi

I think i have done what was suggested and it seems that SU is still fetching Critical Updates only

What i have done is:

  1. In task scheduler, disable the task i created and re-create it in the TVT folder with the arguments
  2. IN TVSU, under Schedule Updates, Tick Enable monthly check, Select Critical and Recomended, Select today's date, which is 24

For testing i set the schedule to run today

Manual updates still fetching more. Why is it not getting all the updates from the Repository Location? Where is it getting from? Is there anything wrong with the arguments i used?

Thanks

Re: Lenovo System Update repository

Several years back, Lenovo changed system update  "parms".
Look inside the .XML in this screenshot.

(1)

"C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\tvsuShim.exe"
/CM -search R -action LIST

(2)

"C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\tvsuShim.exe"
/CM -search C -action INSTALL -includerebootpackages 1,3,4 -noicon -noreboot -nolicense -defaultupdate -schtask

Note the use of undocumented parms. -defaultupdate and -schtask

This will give you a idea of what works.

Re: Lenovo System Update repository

Thanks for your response sclexman

Based on the example you provided from the .xml files as well as you initial task scheduler screenshot, is the following argument correct?

/CM -search R -action LIST -repository \\IT\LenovoTest

I'd like to like search for all the Critical and Recommended Updates from a defined repository location (which i have downloaded updates from via Update Retriever) and get Notification instead of having it silently installed

If i leave the argument as is (with RepositoryLocation1 in registry set back to default: SUPPORTCENTER), it seems that it will fetch both Critical and Recommended Updates online instead of \\IT\LenovoTest on the local network. Changing RepositoryLocation1 to \\IT\LenovoTest will fetch updates that are currently downloaded but Critical Updates only, no Recommended

I feel like i am missing some steps in order to achieve my goals with System Update. Please let me know if you noticed that i am missing a step or have made a mistake

Kind Regards

Re: Lenovo System Update repository

Hi Tommy,

Let me clarify, when scheduled task running,  the "search mode" key in the registry only support 2 value , one is "critical", the other is "recommanded ",   if you set to critical, it will only show  critical udpates, if you set to "recommanded", it will show critical udpates and recommaned drivers. You can not set it to "all".  However,if  mannually lunch TVSU and searching updates, it will show all the updates including critial and recommanded and optionnal,  this is the design .Hope this help you to understand the diffrence.Thanks.

Re: Lenovo System Update repository

Thanks for the reply Jerry. Is there a way for me to change the task scheduler via commands or arguments to get updates from the Repository Location? What commands / arguments should i be using?

Re: Lenovo System Update repository

Hi Tommy,

To archieve your goal, it's complicated and should import the ADM file(may need a Active Directory server) due to security concern. So before I answer your question, May I know are you personal user or enterprise user? meaning do you want to deploy on one single computer or multiple computers? Thanks.

Re: Lenovo System Update repository

Hi Jerry, thanks for your response

I am an enterprise user. What i want to achieve is to have a scheduled update for our lenovo machines. It can be either via local repository with task scheduler or even online update with task scheduler. The goal is to have the lenovo machines updated without much manual work
