Runaway memory usage in Access Connections AcSvc.exe on Windows Vista (SP1).

I have a T61p with the Intel 82566gigabit wired adapter, the intel 4965 wireless adapter, and an advanced mini dock.

Access connections is the latest 4.52 version, and I'm running Vista Sp1 (x86, 32 bit).  Sometimes while using the app to edit profiles or view the diagnostic info the app will become unresponsive, and if I look in task manager in those cases, AcSvc will be running away with increasing memory consumption.  I've seen it hit over 1.5GB of memory usage.  (Restarting the service from the services control console will clear up the problem - until the next time.)

In normal usage, AcSvc consumes nearly 100MB of memory - 98,776 at the moment.  This is enormously piggish for something whose main job is to switch network connections, but I'd be happy if it simply didn't have the bug I described above.

Furthermore - I found that it didn't seem to be possible to use the network connection on the back of the advanced mini dock until I installed Access Connections.  It was completely ignored...  Is it absolutely necessary to have Access Connections installed to use the network jack in the dock?

Thanks,
Andy

Re: Runaway memory usage in Access Connections AcSvc.exe on Windows Vista (SP1).

Yup.  I've been noticing the same problem with my X60 tablet.  I only have 1GB, with Vista SP1.  Things were thrashing considerably at over 350MB between the various daemons (AcSvc, profile manager, tray icon).

Something seriously wrong here.  This has happened multiple times, so I am going to uninstall Access connections until there is a fix.

Anyone else seen this?

Re: Runaway memory usage in Access Connections AcSvc.exe on Windows Vista (SP1).

hi
i have a t61 with vista sp1 (prebuild image from lenovo) and have seen same issues with memory, 1gb last time

i have also noticed that sometimes when switching to different profiles i get the message that my wireless card is now managed by windows, sometimes i can force it to use the AC and sometimes it will not connect

stopping both AC services seems to fix the problem but that is okay for tech savy users but i need to start rolling out vista sp1 to about 20 laptops in our organisation and there is no way i can do this with AC manager behaving hte way it does, and it works so well on xp (have been using ac manager for 5 years now and have deployed it to over 100 laptops in the last couple of years without issues)

i rang lenovo support now and they refused to help me and pointed me to a user guide for version 4.1 and suggested i downgrade to 4.1 (which is from 2006 and i believe does not have vista support :-) ) so i did a rude thing and just disconnected the call as i was just wasting my time, hopefull the forum can help me out here

do i need to do something special to stop windows vista from managing my wireless and wired networks and get AC manager to work properly or should it just do this automatically just as it does on win xp,
cheers
butre

Re: Runaway memory usage in Access Connections AcSvc.exe on Windows Vista (SP1).

Hi.  I have a thinkpad R61 with the Intel wireless abgn wireless adapter, running Vista ultimate, and I'm having the same problem with the latest version of Access connections. (4.52)

I think I've found the problem, but I haven't been able to figure out a solution, and when I called tech support, they were stumped.

Look in c:\windows\inf for a file called setupapi.app.log.

My file size was almost 300mb, as it was updating every three or four seconds with the following:

>>>  [Build Driver List - HTREE\ROOT\0]

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the wireless drivers and access connections.  But the problem reappears.

I'm not a software guy, but I noticed in the log that this started when I upgraded to the latest Access Connections in April.  So my guess is that there's something wrong in the install code - which chews up resources, and causes this to update the log file constantly.  (On my reinstall, with a new log file, the size of the file went from 256kb to 1mb in just under an hour.)

If anybody from Lenovo is reading this, can you look into it?

Thanks.

Bruce

Re: Runaway memory usage in Access Connections AcSvc.exe on Windows Vista (SP1).

hi

i checked the file and it is currenlty 129mb, it does do the same updates as listed on your post
i left my laptop connected to our office wifi network over the weekend and currently the acsvc.exe process is using up a whopping 1.45gb (yes gb) in working set memory (about hte same in working set memory private, cpu usage is reatively calm at about 2% (but what on earth is it doing!!)

when i reboot the computer it goes back to about 80mb and then gradually builds up

this must be one hell of a memory leak (as well as cpu hogging application)

i tend to find lenovo software support pretty bad and i was told as long as the computer starts up that is where our involvement stops, (30 day up and running support) and after that i only receive hardware support.

hopefully this will be fixed soon!!

My SETUPAPI.APP.LOG File is constantly filling with the following entry every 3 seconds.. I cant find any other solutions on the internet and hoping that somebody from Lenovo can assist.

>>>  [Build Driver List - HTREE\ROOT\0]
>>>  Section start 2008/05/13 23:42:57.996
      cmd: "C:\Program Files (x86)\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\AcSvc.exe"
!    dvi: No hardware or compatibile IDs found
<<<  Section end 2008/05/13 23:42:57.999
<<<  [Exit status: SUCCESS]

Re: Runaway memory usage in Access Connections AcSvc.exe on Windows Vista (SP1).

Does anybody from Lenovo read this blog?

I'm sure lots of people are having this problem but aren't aware of it.  (As I said earlier, I only found it when I did a defrag an found that massive log file, setupapi.app.log)

In the meantime, if anybody has any solutions, I'd love to hear them.

Yes, some Lenovo employees do read and post to this forum.  Mark is quite active, and several others post as well.  In addition, there are lurkers who just read without making public comments although sometimes they ask the mod team to either gather more information or pass along advice.

However, here are the expectations of their participation from the Welcome message:

These communities have been created to provide a high quality atmosphere in which users of Lenovo products and services may share experiences and expertise. While members from Lenovo may participate at intervals to engage in the discussions and offer advice and suggestions, this forum is not designed as a dedicated and staffed support channel.

The bottom line is there's no guarantee that you will get an answer to a question here directly from Lenovo.

On the other hand, you just might!  ;-)

FYI, I'm seeing what everyone is reporting (Memory usage steady keeps increasing and the writing to the setupapi.app.log file) and sent it on to Access Connections engineering for investigation..

thanks, it would be great to have this resolved, that would solve my single biggest obstacle of moving our users onto the vista OS

let's hope we see this fixed soon

thanks!
