If you have the system update problem but not using Vista, just XP, then the sollution is the uninstall of .NET Framework 3.5.
Thanks to ThomasDavid to share this information with us.
It has made my System Update work again and it has made my display keyboard work again, which was hidden until now.

solution (found at http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/ru-RU/answerswuru/thread/0ab45a7f-1ea0-424c-acec-8fa9c1f6...) that helped in my case (T60 / 2613CTO / WinXP Pro SP3 IE7) - completely uninstall and install again all .NET Framework updates:
1) use .NET Cleanup Tool, available at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/attachment/8904493.ashx to uninstall all versions of .NET Framework.
2) restart system
3) download and install one by one following packages:

I have been struggling with this and tried all the various solutions on this thread and it still does not work. I am running T61p with XP and all the latest patches. I have modified my IE settings, re-installed the system update from scratch, and deleted .NET files. I still get to about 9% of user data collected when it boms out with this message.

After doing a fresh Windows XP OS install using the Lenovo OEM disks. I uninstalled the productivity center software so that I could download the latest version so I could have access to the system udpates (due to the changes made by Lenovo). So I have struggled with the problem documented on this 28 page thread and others all day today.... but I've finally been able to get around it on my system.
I've done just about everything recommended on this thread and others, but the steps below ultimately fixed it.
I hope these instructions help you!

Thanks Romant for the detailed explanation. It really took 4 hours and solved both the "Input Panel keys disappear" and the "System Update Stop gathering" problem.

Did not work for me. I have a TP Ede 14 running Windows 7 Pro. The correct entry was already in the mapping.xml file.
