I had started the System Update utility this morning. It stated that it needed to be updated. It proceeded, threw up a dialog box stating that it had completed successfully...and then it disappeared. I cannot find it in the start menu, nor can Thinkvantage Tools find it. I have looked in the Program Files folders, and even in the Windows Programs and Features catalog. It's gone.
No problem, I said, I'll just re-install the old System Update. Well, when I did that, the same thing happened. Completed succesfully, but there is no trace of it anywhere.
What's going on here?
I have a X1 Carbon, 4th gen. running Windows 7.

Locate:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\System Update\tvsu.exe"
Right click this, create shortcut. It will offer to create the shortcut on the desktop.

If this folder is not found, locate:
c\users\*yourid*\appdata\local\temp
and post tvsuSetup.log and setup log 2016-12-21#001.txt.

There is no folder named "System Update" In the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo" folder.
Log files are in the attached .zip file.

I experienced the same SU self update failure this morning.
Your log:
Action 20:43:16: InstallSUService. InstallSUService
1: SU service installation failed, please retry the install.
InstallShield 20:43:16: CallScriptFunctionFromMsiCA() ends
CustomAction InstallSUService returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)
Action ended 20:43:16: InstallSUService. Return value 3.
This failure is preventing reinstall of SU 5.7.0037.

The 5.07.0037 uninstall is leaving some files in the System Update folder.

Well, Lenovo released a new version of the TVSU that appears to be working:
