Upgrade from RnR 3.0 to RnR 4 - cannot uninstall RnR 3.

I am trying to install the latest RnR version on my thinkpad t60.

According to instructions, I first tried to uninstall the old RnR through "control planel - add or remove applications".
After clicking remove, a "Windows Installer" window pops up , saying "the installed product does not match the installation source. Until a matching source is provided or the installed product and source are synchronized, the action cannot be performed" The window also provides a "use source" feature, suggesting some c:\windows\....   source.

What must I do to uninstall - never installed 3.0 in the first place, it came with the preconfigured computer.

Regards

DAVID

Re: Upgrade from RnR 3.0 to RnR 4 - cannot uninstall RnR 3.

Just an add-on to clarify:

I pointed the windows installer to the .msi file I think was the original installer file -
at least it matches the purchase date of my laptop and is called "Rescue and Recovery- Client Solution.msi"  -
but I get the  "Windows Installer" popup saying "the file blahblahblah is not a valid installation package. Try to find the installation package blah blah blah".

So where do I get the original installation package. I checked my computer for all *.msi files, to no avail.

Hi David,

I am interested to find out if you received any official response on this. I am having the same problem trying to update rescue and recovery and there is no info on this on the lenovo site.

Re: Upgrade from RnR 3.0 to RnR 4 - cannot uninstall RnR 3.

Segun,

I have not received any official answer, but I found out how to uninstall 3.0 anyway.

The problem was that somehow the registry files pointed to an installation of 3.1 - probably as the result of a botched installation attempt of system update. These registry records made it impossible to remove 3.0 via the control panel uninstall routine - the registry information (3.1) was in conflict with the *.msi installer file (3.0).

The solution was  using "windows installer cleanup", a free utility provided by Microsoft, to get rid of the (wrong) installer information. You will find the utitilty on the windows website.

Step 1: Check the current version of rnr (run rnr and check the version in the help file) - in my case it was 3.0

Step 2: Use "Windows installer cleanup", look for "rescue and recovery" and press remove

Step 3. Reinstall rnr x.y (3.0 in my case) by going to c:\ibmtools\apps\rnr and running tvtnr3.exe or whichever trtnrxy.exe

Step 4: Uninstall rnr x.y via the control panel uninstall routine.

Now you can install 4.2.

Re: Upgrade from RnR 3.0 to RnR 4 - cannot uninstall RnR 3.

Thank you very much for the work around on the uninstall of rnr v3.00.0037 -- this worked but my subsequent install of the V4.2 code was unsuccessful - msg received :
" This version of the Rescue and Recovery program can only be installed on select Lenovo computers. This set up can not continue"
Tried System Update method with the same results
Any clue how to circumvent this defect ? I am using a Lenovo Thinkcentre E50.

upgrade to RnR 4.21

I need to uninstall RnR 3.00.0027.00

When I try to uninstall it, I get an error that the Windows Installer cannot find the .msi file associated with it.  Any ideas how I can get this off my computer so I can install the newer version - RnR 4.21? version 3.0 hasn't worked for about 6 months now and I can't upgrade until I convince my computer to remove version 3

Re: Upgrade from RnR 3.0 to RnR 4 - cannot uninstall RnR 3.

Thanks for the tip. Thanks to you, I was finally able to upgrade RnR, something that I've been trying to do for a couple of years. I, also, was unable to uninstall RnR 3.0, even with my downloaded copy of "Your Uninstaller! 2008". Your Uninstaller! 2008 saw more than one copy of RnR3.0; one copy seemed to be the full version, and the others, I'm guessing, were aborted installations. After running Windows Installer Cleanup, I uninstalled all instances of RnR using either the control panel add/remove-programs or Your Uninstaller! 2008. Then I re-installed RnR3.0 following your instructions, then uninstalled it using the control pannel add/remove-programs utility. Finally, I installed RnR4.2, then upgraded it. It seemed important to restart after every step. When I tried to do all of this without restarting, it didn't work.

Re: Upgrade from RnR 3.0 to RnR 4 - cannot uninstall RnR 3.

I had the same problem. I got through it doing a couple of things, and I'm not sure if only one or both were important.

1. Be sure to restart after every step. I think that the uninstallation and installation steps don't really complete until the computer is restarted.

2. You might try something like "Your Uninstaller! 2008" to get rid of any previous versions of RnR that might be hanging around, but invisible to the control panel add/remove-programs utility. You can download it and use it for free for a trial period, and the trial period may be all you need.
