Lenovo Service Bridge and Lenovo System Interface Foundation are different software products and are NOT related. LSB works with your support page; SIF works in the background supporting Lenovo APPs(companion, settings, account portal).
(1)Uninstall Lenovo settings app, Lenovo companion app, Lenovo account portal app).
(2)Check programs and features for Lenovo system interface foundation install. If found uninstall it, then reboot your system.
(3)Now run the SIF installer, which you have already download. You state it is hanging during the install. It should have "finishing" for a small period of time, then it will reboot your system.
(4)Now install the settings app.
If it still hangs in step 3(sif install), report back what you see.

I do not think SIF is actually required.
On my T420 (4180-PVG) with all original Lenovo supplied components, after struggling for weeks to find out what causes my internal HDD to be active always finally found out it is the SIF. HDD would be active even when idle for hours. Uninstalled it and my HDD is quite now. I uninstalled all third party SW prior to that without realising that the issue is actually a home brewed one.
Now I have to reinstall all barring SIF probably. I do not mind it as perpetual HDD activity also causes the battery to drain a bit faster.
If the above happens to anyone I would suggest not to bother about SIF until Lenovo clears the air why so and/or resolve the issue.
Forgot to add that on my T530 HDD is not active like it was on T420 but since I did not connect the issue to any Lenovo product I never bothered to check if SIF, LSB, etc., are installed on T530 to compare.
- Checked T530 and found companion, LSB, SIF are installed on T530. Quite strange why SIF forces permanent HDD activity on T420.

Thanks for the valued comparison of your two machines. That helps me understand your experience.
Let's get your software/apps current on the "bad boy" machine.
Update SIF via your support page. Current is 1.0.078.00 .
Go to windows store and let it self update Companion and Settings.
The 3 above softwares had bugs in the past, and launched TONS of IMCONTROLLER task as seen in task manager.
See if bad boy machine improves disk activity wise.
Via task manager, 10 IMcontrollers is normal, with low activity. They do awake too often.
If you state OS on each machine, that would help.
SIF is used by Companion and settings and is required for these 2 apps to work.
After software current, we can evaulate activity on your machine. The bad boy.

Thank you for your reply.
Sorry I did not mention about the OS in use. Both units have Windows 10 Pro Version 1703 Build 15063.540, 64bit.
Tried installing LSB faced 0x80070002 issue with .NET 3.5.
Trying to resolve .NET issue.
Having said that I am quite comforatble without LSB, Companion or SIF as I never had it on Windows 7. And I do not see any support for Windows 10 from Lenovo for T420.
Besides I found my T420 to be faster than what it was when it had LSB, Companion, SIF, etc.
However I will post my experience post installation of all these components.
