L512 fan stopped working

2012-01-05, 7:47 AM

Are the L512s known to have fan controller issues?

Here's a rundown of my problems:

I bought a 2598W6M on ebay a few months ago and noticed that the fans would refuse to turn on, and the system would eventually overheat. I updated the BIOS to 1.35, and that fixed the issue instantly. The fan speed would increase with load, and the system stayed very cool. Everything was going great for a few weeks until tonight, when all of a sudden the fans stopped working again. I then decided to update the BIOS to 1.36 to see if that would get things working again, but it did not fix the issue this time. The fans refuse to turn on no matter what operating system I am using. I am able to turn them on manually in openSUSE Linux 12.1 64-bit (# echo level 7 > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan), but turning them back to "auto" stops them instantly.

In Windows 7 SP1 (64bit), there is no mention of fans anywhere in the Lenovo/Thinkvantage software, and the system heats up quickly if I put it under load because I can't manually turn them on.

I found another person that seems to have had the same issue: http://www.dheinemann.com/2011/when-the-thinkpad-is-away/

Any insight? I am going to have to submit a warranty claim I guess....

Re: L512 fan stopped working

Sorry for digging out this old thread, but my L512 experiences the same problem from time to time. Symptoms are:

- Fan does not automatically respond to increasing temperature (both on Windows and Linux), but can still be controlled manually

- Hotkeys (Volume and brightness control, ...) no longer work under Linux

- Bogus temperature sensor readings (CPU temperature says 0°C)

To resolve this issue I usually do:

- Downgrade the BIOS to the previous version (currently 1.38)

- Then upgrade the BIOS again to the most recent version (currently 1.39)

I don't know what exactly causes this problem, but it looks like some ACPI issue to me.

Regards,

Chris
