Droid 4 will not Vibrate for SMS Messages or Phone Calls.

2012-04-11, 5:09 AM

I found that whever Smart Actions puts my phone in Silent Mode while at work or in a meeting, it will also prohibit the phone from vibrating when a SMS Message or Phone call comes in. I have double checked to make sure that "Vibrate" is checked under "Notification Settings" in the SMS Properties. I have searched for some way to allow the phone to vibrate when the ringer is silenced by Smart Actions to no avail. The only way to get the phone to Vibrate again is to disable the Smart Action and reboot the phone. This has become very vexing as I have missed several important work related texts and alerts from my companie's network monitoring system. Any suggestions (other than to simply not use the Smart Actions Application :) Would be greatly appreciated. I otherwise think this is an awesome application. Thank you for your assistance!

Hi kilo03,

Have you read this thread yet? https://forums.motorola.com/posts/58080df76a This describes how your cache might have gotten confused. Let me know if you still have issues and I will ask the team to investigate.

Hello,

Thank you for the recommendation. This seems to have fixed the issue, though I am going to monitor it for the next 36 hours and see if it is completely resolved. I actually had tried to search for this issue but didn't come across the post that your link sent me (could be the search terms I used didn't match, but I did try, lol.) Thank you so much for the link, I will post pack to update the results tomorrow.

I have the same issue but different symptoms and no solution.  Here's my background data:

- I am on my third Droid.  I've upgraded the OS and now have OS level 2.3.6 and system version 6.12.181.XT912.Verizon.en.US

- With my first Droid, the vibrate feature worked for several months then stopped working for SMS and continued to work for calls.  I returned that one and got a new/refurbed model under warranty.  With that 2cnd phone, vibrate for SMS worked for about 3 weeks then stopped working again.  I now am on my 3rd phone (2cnd day) and cannot get the phone to Vibrate for inbound text messages or emails but it does vibrate for inbound phone calls.

- I never configured any Smart Actions on any of the 3 devices but did clear the Smart Actions data as suggested on the other thread - this had no effect.

- I've tried a number of different configurations:  Vibrate Always, Vibrate Always/Silent Mode active, Vibrate only in Silent Mode with Silent Mode active - and can't get the phone to vibrate on an inbound SMS.

I like this phone but this feature is crucial to me - like the above person, I almost always use vibrate to alert me of inbound activity.

Any other ideas?

Wonder if clearing the cache partition using the recovery menu would help?

Clearing the cache partition does NOT change any settings or erase any personal data or content, including downloaded ringtones, images, programs, and contacts stored in the internal memory. This feature allows for clearing of all application/background "cache."
cache partition - explained

This is the partition where Android stores frequently accessed data and app components. Wiping the cache doesn’t affect your personal data but simply gets rid of the existing data there, which gets automatically rebuilt as you continue using the device.

Instructions:

Read each screen carefully as you do this because the "wipe data / factory reset" is also an option in this menu and you do not want to do that!

Clear cache partition using external keys -- follow these steps word for word and it will be a quick and easy process

  1. Power down and wait until you are sure the device is completely off.

  2. Power up the phone by pressing the VOL UP + VOL DOWN KEY together + PWR KEY .

  3. The device will enumerate with different BOOT OPTIONS

  4. Use the VOL DOWN Key to SCROLL and VOL UP Key to SELECT

  5. Select Recovery using the VOL UP key

  6. The device will start up with Motorola logo and power up to a little Android man logo with Exclamation mark

  7. Press the VOL UP and VOL DOWN Key together at this screen

  8. The device will display BLUE Text on a Black background .

  9. Use the VOL DOWN Key to scroll DOWN and the PWR Key to SELECT the option desired .

  10. In this case, press the VOL DOWN key till wipe cache is selected and press the PWR key to confirm the selection .

  11. The device will then start clearing cache

  12. Once the process is complete, press the PWR key to confirm a REBOOT (which is highlighted by default after the cache is cleared)

  13. The message rebooting is displayed on the phone.

  14. The device will reboot and start the normal power up sequence.

Now see if your issue persists. Smile

Wow, you don't have much luck with vibrate. I'm not a specialist on the phone volume control but when you go into settings>sound  is there a "silent mode" list item? If so, select the list item and choose vibrate.

You could try unselecting the vibrate option, then reboot the phone. After phone starts up try selecting vibrate again. Maybe the settings has gotten confused.

Worse case would be to factory reset the phone, but you would lose everything you've setup previously. I don't recommend but it's an option if all is dire.

Thanks for the response.  Just finished and no difference - vibrate won't function for anything except phone calls.  Glad to have access to the phone's boot world but really need to figure this out or get a new phone.

and to respond to your last note...  I've tried all those at different times except for the factory reset.  But I just got a fresh phone two days ago that had been factory reset and the vibrate function didn't work at all so no need (I think) to try it again.
