Got Myself Absolutely Confused!!

2011-12-04, 19:38 PM

Ok, I've been experimenting with SmartActions and the only thing I've managed to do with any certainty is confuse the heck out of myself...I am "wrapped around the axle".  Someone please explain:

-What requires cell data enabled to work?

-What requires background sync enabled to work?

-If cell data and background sync are disabled but WiFi is on can you get gmail?

From what I have been able to tell, if you are connected to a Wi-Fi network the only thing you can't receive with cell data disabled are MMS messages. You will still be notified, but can't download until you enable cell data.

With background sync off I think you can receive Gmail but will probably have to actively check for it versus being notified that you have new mail.

Thanks for the input.  I played around with the Razr last night and figured this out:  with cell data turned off, WiFi off and backgound off all you can get is phone and sms, no email pushed to you.  With cell data off, wifi on and background data on you can get all three.  WiFi on and no background data will not allow push email...as you said, you have to go get the email.  Just trying some different scenarios for SmartActions and I discovered I didn't understand as much as I thought I understood

To answer each question:

-What requires cell data enabled to work?

There are no applications which 'require' cell data to work. Cell data turns off and WiFi takes over when connected (automatically by Android). Any app which uses data (like email) simply uses whatever data connection is available.

-What requires background sync enabled to work?

There are no applications which 'require' background sync or background data to work for the same reasons mentioned above. Again, applications don't know what type of data connection exists. Background data is typically used by a background service, such as Gmail.

-If cell data and background sync are disabled but WiFi is on can you get gmail?

Yes, presuming WiFi is connected.

Actually, you will have to have cell data enabled if you want to be able to receive MMS messages. When I have it disabled, I get the notification that I have a new MMS, but when I try and download it I can't until Cell Data is enabled. This is when I am connected to a wifi network, by the way.
