Smart Actions Location Service Problem

2011-11-18, 14:54 PM

The location setting in smart actions doesn't seem to work when the display is off.

I have set the phone to turn off bluetooth when I am at home or work.  If the display is on, it works fine, but if the display is off, the smart action is not triggered. The smart action doesn't start or end if the display is off, it just stays in the mode it was in when the display was last on.

I had a smart action that turned off a few things when the display is off, but I disabled that smart action and I still had the issue of the location based smart actions not triggering.

This makes the location based triggers quite useless for me.

Just a thought, but have you checked the advanced settings for your WiFi configuration?  It may be that you have it set to turn WiFi off when screen off..  this would mean that the smart action location trigger (which relies on active WiFi) wouldn't work if your screen was off.  Hope this helps.

I didn't see any advanced WiFi setting to turn it off when the screen goes off.

Since I wrote the post, I have had it work sometimes and sometimes not work with the display off.  I have even had it not work with the display on, and I should have been far enough from home for the home location to no longer be in range.

Sounds like this isn't it, but the setting to turn off Wi-Fi when the screen is off is under Menu > Settings > Wireless & network > Wi-Fi settings > Menu > Advanced > Wi-Fi sleep policy. (Whew!)

I will test this one myself -- thanks.

Maybe the Canadian version of the settings screen is different.  I get to:

Settings > Wireless & network > Wi-Fi settings

Then my options are:

Wi-Fi

Open network

Secure network

...list of remembered Wi-Fi networks...

Add Wi-Fi network

Manage networks

Thanks, I didn't know clicking menu did anything when looking at settings, nice to know.

I checked it out and the wifi is set to never sleep.

I will do a little exploring now to see what other things I can control when clicking menu in settings.

I am new to android, so I am not aware of these things.

My understanding of the location trigger is that it mainly uses Wi-Fi, it doesn't even allow you to turn off Wi-Fi based on location, but it does allow you to turn off both cellular data and GPS.

When my display is off, I use smart actions to turn off cellular data.  Originally I also turned off GPS, but when I noticed the location problem, I didn't turn off GPS anymore.

Could the problem for me be because I am turning off cellular data when the display is off?  The phone still works when it is off, so the cellular signal is not being disabled, only the data is.

I think I figured out the issue.  It looks like a time based trigger will activate when the display is off, but it won't deactivate.  When I was originally testing the smart actions, I saw that if the WiFi is on and is then turned off by a time based trigger, when the time period ends, WiFi would turn back on.  So I set a Night time-based trigger that turned of WiFi, Cellular Data and GPS, expecting that those things would automatically turn back on in the morning.

Last night, I added another Day time-based trigger that turns on WiFi, Cellular Data and GPS, and everything worked as it should this morning.
