Smart Actions: Location not based on WiFi

2012-01-14, 1:29 AM

Posing a question here. I love Smart Actions, when set-up correctly, it truly makes my smartphone, a smart phone. I do have a question though. Why is it that WiFi MUST be enabled to used location servcies, and is there anyway to use location services to turn off WiFi when I'm not in range of a usable network? I have WiFi at work and home, but when I'm not at work or home (driving for example) my phone is constantly searching for wifi. Considering that I'm on the road a lot and I go to school at night, that's a lot of time that my phone is both on 4G and Wifi, which almost defeats the purpose of a battery-saving app.

I know JD features this type of action, but I like Smart Actions better, and would prefer to use it exclusively if possible.

I have found myself using both JD and SA. I find that sometimes SA is not very good at doing things I want, and JD has helped my battery life. So the combo really makes my Razr great.

Yea, I was hoping to avoid that. All I really want JD to do is handle WiFi (which of corse you have to pay for). What settings do you have JD handling versus SA?

I use JD to control the battery usage but also WiFi. I have it set to trigger WiFi on at locations that I visit on a regular basis. Such as my home. The WiFi goes on and that sets off a SA that turns on my BT to connect to my home phone which is has BT as well. Now I have 2 lines my hard wire and my cell.

It also turns off data so that all data goes through the router and saves battery. When I leave JD turns off WiFi and turns on 4G data as well as BT.

I also have battery savings set in JD. I use SA to turn of the volume on my Razr at 10PM (no problem with phone as it rings on my home phone [see above]) and turns it back on at 6AM.

Hope this helps.

It helps, and I'll probably start using it this way. Still, I wish SA would just do it all. Thanks for your help!

If you are turning off WiFi to extend battery life, you may not get the benefit you expected. In older phones, just having WiFi on used to consume a great deal of power. Today however WiFi chips use very little energy to run at idle, and typically take less power to send data than 4G.

I'm sorry but you are wrong on the WiFi subject WiFi eats your battery when it is looking for a network.  Try turnign it on all day and see how much battery it uses scanning for networks

Yip, my wifi connection at work got screwed up yesterday so it couldn't connect. It sat there all day scanning for networks and trying to re-connect. Battery was 15% when I got home. Today it connected to the wifi correctly because we sorted out the configuration problem and I actually did more things on my phone - now it's at 70% battery.

It would be nice if they would allow SA to see the gps info for it's location trigger .....
