Re: BIOS updates for Meltdown and Spectre

2018-07-22, 21:11 PM
The hardware of the CPU is not going to be changed by BIOS updates. It will require a complete re-write of the platform itself (new CPU tech) to overcome.

Basically - the Pre-Fetch, Speculative, and Out of Order sequencing of the current CPU hardware that makes "multi-threadded" and "multi-core" CPUs work more efficently has led to a significant "hole" that can be used to snoop the contents of the system cache, that is used by the CPU to handle information.

While this is concerning, it only applies to systems that can be compromised by an external connection (LAN or WLAN penetration) to use.

If your system is behind a competent firewall appliance, you have strong Anti-Malware running and your system Firewall is up then it is "computationally unfeasible" that you will be attacked by the software that could exploit the bugs.

Re: BIOS updates for Meltdown and Spectre

Hello,

I have a Thinkpad E520 and do not see it in the update list:

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/LEN-18282

Does this mean there will not be a BIOS update?  Intel has a microcode update for the processor.

Thanks

I was on a Chat with an Intel Support Rep today.

He confirmed that the OEM's should be releasing an updated BIOS incorporating their micro code fix once the stable release is finalized. Accordingly its all suppose to be in place and done now. So why are not updated to the BIOS not showing up.

I have a Z70-80 and no bios update since 2015.

Probably because of the age of the unit, they appear to not care about anything beyond a few years, all about marketing and the almighty $$

And the lack of support for critical security updates is an excellent reason to shop elsewhere.

Lenovo,

It would be most helpful to see a list of models that you definitively will not be updating the microcode on.  I would be very disappointed to replace a perfectly good computer to find out later that the bios was later updated.

Have you considered charging a fee on older models?   I would pay, as my Thinpad Edge 520 is still working so well!

Hope to hear back!
