If you still have that icon, it's a remnant. In that case, I'd go ahead and run the McAfee removal tool. MCPR : http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

I ran this removal tool and it seemed to be removing some files but after the reboot I still found a "McAfee Security Advisor" tile on the Start screen and the mcagent.exe in the notification are of the task bar. But they seems to be only labels without any function attached to them. See in the following image:

These tutorials may help:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/293-notification-area-icons-hide-show-system-icons-notifications.html

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/22285-action-center-messages-turn-off-windows-8-a.html

Try turning system icons/notifications off. Reboot and turn them on again.

I think you misunderstood my problem. It's not about how to show or hide an icon in the notification area; after all each icon in the list has 3 options for that. The problem is that the "mcagent.exe" remains in the list of those options even though McAfee itself was already removed from the PC. Same goes for the "McAfee Security Advisor" tile on the Start screen as you can see in the following link: http://i41.tinypic.com/4g437b.jpg

Unfortunately that picture had to be taken with my phone camera as the Windows Snipping Tool doesn't work on the Start screen.

Your suggestions didn't address how to remove ether of these two McAfee remnants.

I thought you meant that the Action Center is still showing a placeholder for McAfee. When I had that problem hiding/rebooting/unhiding removed the icon that had been connected with a program I had uninstalled. The reboot refreshed what was displayed.

For the Metro/Modern tile, have you tried to right-click on the tile to delete it?
Also take a look in your Program Data folder. If one for McAfee remains, delete the folder.
This may help. Scroll down to: How to remove Apps and programs to the Windows 8 Metro Start Screen

OK, that tip worked in removing the Metro tile. Now the only reminder of McAfee is that "mcagent.exe" option in the Icons notification list with the usual 3 options: Show icon and notifications, Hide icon and notifications, and Only show notifications. I think removing that item from the list would probably require registry edit.

If hiding the icon and rebooting did not help you have a couple of choices:

1. Post at McAfee's forum to see if anyone else has had a similar problem and knows how to fix it.
https://community.mcafee.com/community/help?view=overview

2. Post at SpywareHammer or a similar malware removal site and have one of the staff trained in the Malware Removal Forum write a registry script or find another way to help you remove the icon. Help is free, but you will need to register. They will have you post a couple of logs. Even though you do not have a malware problem, they address anything unwanted as if it were malware. That will show them exactly where that registry entry is located so that it can be removed. http://www.spywarehammer.com/

Hello,

It sounds like a McAfee component is still registered in Windows Management Instrumentation's catalog of installed anti-malware software, which is what the Action Center takes its cues from with respect to what's installed.  Try the following steps to reset things:

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt (filename: CMD.EXE) via Winkey+X,A.
  2. Issue a "winmgmt /verifyrepository" command.
  3. Issue a "winmgmt /salvagerepository" command.  if you receive an error that the repository is inconsistent or that the operation failed, repeat the command again.
  4. Close the Command Prompt and restart the computer

At this point, McAfee agent software should no longer be registered.  If problems persist, I would suggest contacting McAfee tech support for further assistance.

I've been on the McAfee sommunity web site and one of the support guys was pretty helpful that lead me to RegEdit and deleting all Registry entries with the "McAfee" string in it. That worked for all except one "Path" value that seemed directly related to the Notification Area. When I ran the winmgmt stuff you suggested, in both cases the result was ssome msg indicating failure.

But then, when I booted up this morning, the mcagent.exe icon was no longer in the Notification Area. Just like that! So my problem is now essentially solved and the single McAfee entry still in the Registry does not seem to affect anything.
