Is it virus or something?

2018-01-15, 13:30 PM

Hello,

I got this grammatically strange message, wondering that it might be suspicious, didn't click OK. No threats found with ESET.

Any experiences?

That is a bit odd. Do you have Lenovo Vantage installed?

I have not seen that pop-up yet, but I suspect there is a problem with the translation. I will check this out for you.

SimonB88, thanks for reporting this and thanks also to Hoov for bringing it to my attention.  I have filed a bug for this, we will get it fixed.  It's not a virus.  The message is just telling you that a BIOS update has been installed and you need to reboot your computer for the update to take effect.

This helped me too

I just updated something like this. And now my laptop is froze and will not boot past the Lenovo logo, ironically. I don't have time to jack with this bug. Going out to buy a non Lenovo laptop. Sad.

I hope this reaches someotherguy who seems super helpful and responsive!  Editing because my screenshots didn't come up?

BIOS Update - 10 [64] - 4QCN51WW

Hi - I've tried calling support, but keep getting bounced between departments; everyone is very nice, but doesn't seem to understand the full story, so I decided to post it to this thread which has been the most helpful.

I've been getting this alert and been putting it off since I know sometimes BIOS updates can take a long time and maybe interfere with software.  I decided to do the update tonight when the window popped it.

It's the same window in the screenshot posted at the start of this thread by SimonB88.

When I click OK, it brings me to Lenovo Vantage.

It then starts the installation process.  However, there seems to be a third party vendor that did the BIOS update called InsydeFlash and when I Googled the company, it seems like they are engineers who do BIOS.

The logo was a bit strange, but I've worked with applications that look old, especially when dealing with more dramatic changes (screenshot 1 below).

I continued with the update and when my laptop restarted, it was running smoothly and was a relatively quick update.

I then checked the Lenovo Vantage to confirm the BIOS was installed successfully, which it indicates it was (screenshot 2).

At first, my main concern was that when I double checked through the forums to make sure I wasn't missing an additional update, there seems to be a lot of fear and confusion with the InsydeFlash installer.

I have been reading through MANY threads and articles related to InsydeFlash, and it seems to be sort of misleading with it's old-school GUI.  I was a bit fearful I did install a virus after reading a thread on Lenovo here https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Yoga-Book-Windows/Today-i-Received-an-BIOS-update-from-Insyde-H2OFFT-Flash-Firmware-Tool-Version-6-20/m-p/4622973, but also found one on HP that addresses the same issue from 2017: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/BIOS-update-from-INSYDE-Flash-today/td-p/6468453.

The 2017 support thread has a support person who confirms InsydeFlash (insyde) is a developer that Microsoft uses for its BIOS updates.

My biggest concern is how despite the updates from Lenovo saying the BIOS updates are critical (which I have heard in the past when I've used other Windows devices) is that I should NOT be updating my BIOS unless something is wrong (is this accurate?)  I was even told this on the phone when I called just now.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide, it seems like this will be the most useful thread for me to interact with.
