KRACK Attack: New WiFi drivers?

2017-10-18, 8:33 AM

Hey,

regarding the severe WiFi security issues called KRACK (https://www.krackattacks.com/): When will Lenovo roll out new driver versions? For the Intel devices, they are available already, but not on the Lenovo site:

E.g. for Thinkpad t440p (Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260) version 18.33.9.3 from Oct 16th is safe, but Lenovo has a version from July for download.

When will this be updated?

Thanks!

Hello Ascendor, welcome to the Community,

I would suggest you follow the WPA2 Protocol Vulnerabilities document on the Lenovo Security advisory page; this is usually the first place to find updates on these types of issues.

Thank you @Andy_Lenovo. I bookmarked the Security advisory page. It's good to know Lenovo is aware.
The page doesn't answer my question on a timeline for fixing yet.

Do you have more information on that available?

It seems the advisory page has been updated, but it does raise more questions than answers. No schedule yet on the WLAN drivers - which seems disappointing, considering how long they've been out from Intel. Additionally AMT firmware updates seem to be needed.

I appreciate that Lenovo probably wants to get both done at the same time, but considering the severity, I think publishing a tentative schedule would be prudent.

I think the issue was on the OS side and Microsoft has already patched that vulerability in October 2017 Patch Tuesday.

Yes and no. There have been patches from OS side. Yet, some Wifi drivers and Laptops also need updates. In the meantime there have been patches from Lenovo for the Intel Wifi adapters and for the Intel Management Engine to fix those issues.

The overview page: https://support.lenovo.com/il/en/product_security/len-17420 does not seem to be up to date on this. Search for your laptop model's drivers, there are some available which are new this November and patch the vulnerability according to the README. E.g. for the T440p: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/il/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/THINKPAD-T-SERIES-LAPTOPS/THINKPAD-T440P/downloads/DS112917

For Lenovo Yoga 500-14ISK the Wi-Fi driver fixing the issue (according to https://security-center.intel.com/advisory.aspx?intelid=INTEL-SA-00101&languageid=en-fr) is now downloadable through Device Manager update mechanism.
