MCafee "killed" CPU of my toally new LEnovo Yoga 920 - it was going too hot

2018-03-26, 14:24 PM

Hi all,

I had strange problem with my Lenovo Yoga 920. IT was coming too hot, CPU stopping to operate properly, screen freezing etc. I was thinking that some hardware problem. BUT, we just unisntalled the MCafee which was originally installed, and seems everything is ok.
Did anyone else has such problem?

I guess Lenovo producers must look at some bags with MCafee.

McAfee, Norton.. you name it, they all hog CPU at boot-up if they're past-due a virus scan. Probably the reason a lot of computer users use something else. My 910 just uses Microsoft's Defender product. I had McAfee on the 920 I have, but uninstalled it once the trial period ended.

You can adjust McAffee's settings to possibly mitigate that behavior. Biggest is to not schedule any kind of routine virus check. But you'll need to remember to start a scan when you're not using the computer.

I don't think it's a Lenovo "bug." Same thing has happened on other computers I've owned with McAfee and Norton. Systems were pretty sluggish at boot-up until the AV software had done its thing.

If it would be any comfort to you, my first Yoga 920 was not happy with McAfee and gone crazy with Norton. Not sure if it was McAfee or Norton alone, or by the influence from others apps & drivers.

On the second Yoga 920, McAfee was one of the first thing I removed, then activated Windows Defender and installed the latest Malwarebytes Premium. The combination seemed to work well.

Times will tell.

The VERY first thing I did with the 920 was REMOVE McAfee. Windows Defender has proven to be a good solution.

Hello Arman,
As Doctordon mentioned " You can adjust McAfee's settings to possibly mitigate that behavior. Biggest is to not schedule any kind of routine virus check. But you'll need to remember to start a scan when you're not using the computer...."

I agree that it's not an issue with McAfee bugs. Perhaps it was trying to update or scan while other apps were running. That can happen with other AV's as well. I, too, use Windows 10's resident Defender. It has done well in recent testing. Along with Malwarebytes Premium, that combination seems to be the best of all worlds for my computer use. If you feel that you need more, ESET is used by many of the regulars here.

Hi again,

Changes of MCafee seetings is a solution, but i also think better just uninstall it and use defender. I was really thinking that computer has hardware problem because of this stupid situation. I think, Lenovo producers need to have in mind that such problems can appear.
I am using defender now and absolutely no problem - running very well.

Hello,

Probably the best thing to do is open a ticket with McAfee's support department.  They will be able to tell you what sort of logs and other information they need to investigate and fix the bug in their software.
