T520 BIOS Update Version 1.47 to address Meldown and Spectre bug

2018-03-20, 14:22 PM

When running the update is comes with message ..'Proceed only if technical documentation instructs you to do so...

This BIOS update:

Enhancement to address CVE-2017-5715.

The well known Meltdown and Spectre 'bugs', I am a little confused now in to do so, as I understood it was necessary.

But the text warning puts me a bit off, anyone done it yet? any advise?

Hello,

That message sounds like standard technical boilerplate language.  As with any UEFI BIOS update to a ThinkPad, you will want to have a fully-charged battery inserted and the unit plugged into the AC mains.

If you would like to install the UEFI BIOS update you certainly can.  Or, if you would like to wait a while and see if a newer update comes out, someone reports an issue, etc., you can do that as well.

Currently, while there are a few snippets of "proof of concept" code floating around attempting to invoke Spectre or Meltdown on computers, there's no actual fully-weaponized malware ("malicious software") out there to perform attacks.  So, for the time being, you are technically safe even if you don't install the update.  However, that could change and it could be a problem rapidly at some point, so installing the patch would help put you ahead of any attackers.

Regards,
