A question regarding the latest UEFI update for the x3550 M4

2020-03-25, 22:38 PM

Hello everybody. I have a fairly basic question about something I read in the change log of the latest UEFI update for the x3550 M4, which is located at the link below.

https://delivery04.dhe.ibm.com/sar/CMA/XSA/08oto/0/ibm_fw_uefi_d7e172d-3.10_anyos_32-64.chg

In the "Version 1.50 - BuildID: D7E134E" section, it states, "Add support for Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product family."

Does that mean with this update it will be possible to install a Xeon E5-2600 v2 processor in an x3550 M4 (or x3650 M4) that previously only supported Xeon E5-2600 v1 processors WITHOUT upgrading the motherboard?

Thanks!

Dear sir,

You are correct.

In the "Version 1.50 - BuildID: D7E134E" section, it states, "Add support for Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product family."

It means with this Version 1.50 update it will support installing a Xeon E5-2600 v2 processor in an x3550 M4 (or x3650 M4) that previously only supported Xeon E5-2600 v1 processors WITHOUT upgrading the motherboard.

But you must be aware that system installing Xeon E5-2600 v1 processor needs to update UEFI to version 1.50 first and then change CPU to Xeon E5-2600 v2 processor. The system may not boot up if you upgrade in reverse.

Hi John

What is the model number or machine type of your x3550 M4?

According to System x3550 M4 Product Guide, it should support Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product family.

Hi Dannyhsueh. The machine in question is a 7914-AC1, which has a Xeon E5-2609, 2.40GHz processor in it, which, presumably, makes it a first generation x3550 M4, rather than a second.

Previously, I thought the only way to get a second generation Xeon processor to work in a first generation server like mine was to replace the motherboard. However, unless I'm misinterpreting it, it appears the UEFI update, which, as far as I know, applies to all 7914 servers, makes it possible.

Does that sound right to you?

Thanks!

One more thing. According to the links below, the Xeon E5-2609 version 1 and version 2 processors are the same socket type; FCLGA2011. Perhaps that makes adding support for the version 2 processors to a first generation 7914 server like mine as easy as a UEFI update?

Version 1

Version 2

Thanks!
