Lenovo XClarity BoMC 11.7.0 cannot start on WinPE 10 - bomc_gui.exe ERROR "Cannot locate dxva2.dll..." But library already exist!

2020-02-25, 6:39 AM

Hi, IBM System x Gurus!

We try to maintenance old (but still in good state) System x servers in one of our DC: we start from clean from dust, check and clean all contacts and cables, take a electrical lubricant on a connection pins, refresh CPU Thermal Grease, check current parameters from PSU, and take full internal server tests.

And the second one step would be updating to latest firmware all parts including controllers.

And exactly on this step we stuck to a problem:

- after downloading fresh Version 11.7.0 (lnvgy_utl_lxce_bomc01q-11.7.0_windows_i386) from Lenovo support site Lenovo XClarity Essentials Bootable Media Creator (BoMC) cannot start on WinPE 10 - after "Extracting..." and "Executing..." messages on the top left corner of screen the modal window appesr

bomc_gui.exe SYSTEM ERROR

"Cannot locate dxva2.dll..."

But library already exist in Win system32 and system64 directory! After copying dxva2.dll to exact the same directory where BoMC .exe exist - the same error. Version 11.5.0 - the same result.

P.S. Let to note, we boot from USB stick. But BoMC are on freshly formatted 149Gb internal SAS drive.

Please help ASAP!

Appreciate Your time and help!

Hi Sergei_Shablovsky

Please install BoMC on your laptop or other computer. It does not support WIN PE. It is used to create bootable media for you to update the firmware.

Thank You Ryan! Could You be so please to suggest us a right tool to speed-up update a bunch of our old (from 2009 to 2015 manufactured) servers? I mean OneCLI or UpdateXpress, or Bootable Media Creator, or start from ServerGuide + Dynamic System **bleep**ysis + Advanced Settings Utility...?

Not sure how old your machines are. You can check the Supported Systems list(included some IBM machines) for BoMC. If all your system are supported, BoMC bootable media will be one good choice.

Just to create one CD included all the firmware you need. Then you can update one bye one.

Here is a video instruction for BoMC:

Thank You!

So, please confirm that using BoMC (and selecting all used models) are better choice than using Dynamic System **bleep**ysis + Advanced Settings Utility at first step, than UpdateXpress + OneCLI + Scripting Toolkit on the second step.

Because we have a lot of different servers in a facility, which size of USB (I have a tough that 4 or 8 Gb DVD would be too small for this amount of data) we need ? Approximately, of course, - 16Gb, 64Gb, 128Gb, 256Gb ?

Thank You so much again!

And last but not the list question linked to this case: please point me on IBM System x and Lenovo System X servers upgrade matrix: I mean common chart where for each Machine Type where min -> max CPU, min -> max RAM, min -> max SAS, etc...

Thank You!

Hi Sergei_Shablovsky

Glad to help. About the USB key size, it depends on how many data you need to download. I'm not so sure. Maybe you can try to down as ISO file first, so you will know the size. Then to create the bootable USB key.

There no a matrix to show all IBM and Lenovo. But there is information for different models, you may look for the machine you need on https://lenovopress.com/ for product guide.

Thank You for help!

May be You not clear understanding how BoMC work: it's collect all packets and after that able to make any media: CD, or DVD, or USB....

So from this point of view no matter which format You choose at the end step.

Ok, I'l try.
