New Raid 1 1Tb on x3550 M4 system: cannot locate installed new disks in bios

2021-02-14, 16:01 PM

Hi All
I've a x3550 M4 with VmWare environment with 3 raid 1 configured:
first - raid 1 - 300Gb
second - raid 1 - 300Gb
third - raid 1 - 1Tb (p/n: 81Y9691)
The storage interface is LSI MegaRAID Serveraid M1115 SAS/SATA.
I've bought other 2 1tb (81Y9691) in order to expand storage for a new VM.
New disks are the same of third raid 1 storage.
After phisical installation i'm not able to locate new disks into raid bios.
I'm not able to create virtual disk raid 1 - 1Tb.

Thanks for help.

Hi Sir,

If the hard drive configuration of your System x3550 m4 support up to eight 2.5" hot-swap SAS/SATA HDDs? According to ServeRAID M1115 SAS/SATA Controller Product Guide, it support eight internal 6 Gbps SAS/SATA ports. Would you please refer Lenovo System x3550 M4 Installation and Service Guide section Hard disk drive problems to check the hard disk drive status LED first.

Hi

Sorry for my late...

I'm just in front of the server in order to check led status:

led status are not lit, but if i insert the disk again lits blink for a little time, than they became not lit again.

If i extract one of new disks the system adv me that one disk has removed.

If i insert the disk the system close the advise.

I've checked again into bios if are there any new disks but the it seems to locate only 6 disks (see attach).

Have you got any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Hi sir,

If not misunderstanding, currently you installed total 8 drives on the system. The 2 new 1 TB drives installed on slot 6 and slot 7.

So have you tried to swap the drive location to check if problem repeat? This can help isolate if it's one drive problem.

Originally the two 1 TB drives installed on slot 4 and slot 5, you can install the new 1 TB drives to slot 4 and slot 5, and take the old ones to slot 6 and slot 7.

Hi Zhangww14
It's correct;

there are 8 disks, 3 raid 1 configured with new not configured like this:

- 2x 300Gb - first raid 1 - 1VM

- 2x 300Gb - second raid 1 - 2VM

- 2x 1Tb - third raid 1 - 1VM

- 2x 1Tb - no config

I've installed the 2 new disks into slot 6 and 7; the disks are the same part number (81Y9691) of 4 and 5 slot.

I can try with tests you suggested only moving all vm on a backup server, otherwise my customer doesn't want to risk a stop of the server.

It's really dangerous on a live machine.

Is it possible that the firmware of new disks are updated and forward and the raid interface is too old?

Raid M1115 Firmware package v. is 20.11.1-0137.

Could it the origin of this issue?

Thanks in advance

Hi Sir,

I don't think so, the symptom is the new drives on slot 6 and slot 7 not detected in webbios, most possibility is something wrong about the HDD backplane or the new drives.

The system you installed 8 drives in total, then there should be two HDD backplane, the advice to swap the location of drive is to check the drives or slot 6&slot 7 can work or not.

Anyway, most of the time we advise customer update the latest firmware or driver to avoid potential problems.

You can search the latest firmware by the link:
