Replacement raid controller on system x 3650 M5 MT 5462

2020-03-07, 15:26 PM
Hi everyone, I wanna ask for some informartion, i have 1 server system x 3650 M5, using RAID 10, with 4 HDD, suddenly my server doesn't reboot correctly, there is a warning : L2/L3 Cache error was detected on the RAID controller. "Please contact technical support to resolve this issue. Press 'X' to continue or else power off the system, replace the controller and reboot. Then i press x to continue, then the server boot normally to my centos 7, For now, i have plan to replace the raid controller which model is SERVERAID MS1215 SAS/SATA, I will replace it with the same model M1215 too, The big question for me, is it my existing raid will be destroyed when i replace the raid controller? Or the hdd will detect raid normally because it's a same model then boot normally to my OS ? Please advice. Thankyou and regards, InGenetic

Hi InGenetic

If you want to replace the same model of RAID controller. You can backup array configuration first, and then restore the configuration to new RAID controller without create RAID array again.

You can refer to KB- How to save and restore RAID controller configurations using MegaRAID Storage Manager

Note: We recommend to back up important data before beginning any action on the raid controller.

Did i have to shutdown the server to save the raid configuration ? Hi InGenetic

  1. You can download the MegaRAID Storage Manager utility for Windows or Linux, and then install it. I also attached ServeRAID-M User Guide for your reference for your reference.
  2. You don't need to shutdown the server to save the configuration, but you need to shutdown the server to replace new RAID controller.
  3. The step to replace controller is: Save RAID configuration -> Shutdown the server -> Remove old RAID controller -> Install new RAID controller -> Turn on the server -> Boot up to OS -> Launch MSM -> Check the new RAID controller have been detected -> Restore RAID configuration.
  4. IMM do not support RAID configuration backup or restore feature. You can find more information from the landing page.

Hi InGenetic

I recommend to install one more hard disk to install fresh Windows OS with MSM utility. And then you can backup and restore RAID configuration under Windows OS.

Hi

You can press ESC to ignore the message, and then you will boot up to UEFI. You can check if the RAID controller can be detected under UEFI or not.
