Support for Windows Server 2019/2016 with System x3650 M4 HD/BD Type 5460/5466 & x3530 M4 Type 7160

2019-08-22, 3:23 AM

Hi All,

I am searching for answers with attempting to install Windows 2019 or even 2016 on these models:

System x3650 M4 HD M/MT 5460

System x3650 M4 BD M/MT 5466

System x3530 M4 M/MT 7160

I am finding it very difficult to find any information on any OSes officially being supported on these other than 2012R2 which I find very hard to believe. Also it seems like even with 2012R2, Update Express 10.6 will tell me there are no updates for these servers for this OS. The whole timeperiod of when Lenovo purchased the x Series products from IBM is quite a mess.  Any help would be appreciated.

Joe

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your response. Concerning that OSIG webpage - I have checked here but something important to note is the following but I believe there is an omission or problem with the listings on this site. Here is the reason. If you search for say the x3650 M4 on this site, you will notice there is no official support for 2016 or 2019 revisions on the MT/M 5460 or 5466, however, the server MT/M 7915 x3650 M4 DOES support 2016 and even 1709/1803(Likely 2019 as well). The reason why this distinction is important to note is because the 7915 server was launched on September 19, 2012 according to this https://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?infotype=dd&subtype=ca&&htmlfid=897/ENUS112-144.  However, the x3650 M4 HD MT/M 5460 was released on November 29, 2013 according to this link https://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?htmlfid=877/ENUSZG13-0260&infotype=AN&subtype=CA&appname=skmwww. Additionally the x3650 M4 BD MT/M 5466 was released even later on

February 12, 2014 according to this link

So in essence, 2 servers released over 1 year after the x3650 M4 7915(September 19, 2012) actually do not have support for 2016 but the oldest server DOES. This does not make any sense especially if you consider that the 5460/5466 we released over a year after the 7915 and 2016 server was released on less than 3 years after their initial offering date.

This is why I posted here because I think these machine types 5460/5466 have been orphaned during the transition from IBM to Lenovo and I believe the OSIG and/or Updatexpress/Serveguide products need to updated to include support for these NEWER servers if they support the older ones already.

Hi jroosen

Thanks for you feedback.

I understand that you have a need to use the machine. But all machines are tested and certified during the development phase, so that we can provide the corresponding update file and firmware for each machine. But every machine listed above is already withdraw product.

This is not just return to the R&D phase to re-certify, but all components need to be retested, updated.
At the moment, it is very difficult to do this.

Hope you can understand.
