Re: System x 3250M6 - Boot To ServeRAID M1200 Series RAID Web Bios

2019-08-21, 11:08 AM

Hi Ccchen,

The RAID settings were preconfigured by Lenovo at build (2 x 1TB drives as RAID 1 and 1 x 1 Tb drive as a Hot Spare) so we have not played with configuration since raising the initial post.

We have spent a lot of time on this today but still end up with the screen shown previously :

We have disabled the virtual drive initialisation (background process) - still no RAID WebBIOS at start-up.

We have cleared the RAID card virtual drive configuration - still no RAID WebBIOS at start-up.

We have cleared the RAID card configuration - still no RAID WebBIOS at start-up.

We have reset the RAID card to its defaults - still no RAID WebBIOS at start-up.

We have disabled the PXE network boot for both NICs (removes Cntl+S option) as this was a known problem for competing with the WebBIOS (Cntl+ sequence) on similar RAID cards / systems.

We have disabled the DVD drive as this was a known problem for the RAID WebBIOS on some motherboards.

We are running RAID Controller Package 24.21.0-0097 (latest) which is firmware version 4.680.01-8459.

We have inspected the firmware changelog, however, there are no reference to WebBIOS that we can see.

Q. Is there a firmware downgrade for the RAID card which is confirmed to carry the WebBIOS interface for our server build System x 3250 M6 (3633 AC1) ? This may bring our post to a conclusion if that works.

Re: System x 3250M6 - Boot To ServeRAID M1200 Series RAID Web Bios

Hi Ccchen,

We have investigated this further.

The RAID BIOS screen at start-up shows as Avago MegaRAID SAS-MIF BIOS V 6.36.00.3 while the device installed is Lenovo ServeRAID M1215 (all of this is the standard Lenovo configuration).

Broadcom has acquired Avago MegaRAID. Searching the Broadcom support pages for MegaRAID leads us to the following article associated with difficulties with WebBIOS unable-to-enter-megaraid-bios-webbios-configuration-utility

Amoung other things it says that the system keyboard must be a PS2 keyboard.  If the keyboard is a USB keyboard, serial keyboard, or any other type of keyboard the system BIOS must be set to PS2 Emulation.

Lenovo System x 3250 M6 (3633 AC1) does not have legacy PS/2 keyboard / mouse ports. The motherboard BIOS does not have a PS/2 emulation option either. The lack of support for both means we can't check this out to confirm.

It futher suggests that for this type of build (Lenovo System x 3250 M6 (3633 AC1)), access to the RAID controller at startup (prior to the operating system loading) can only be done via the motherboard BIOS i.e. F1 -> System Settings -> Storage. From there you should have as much functionality as anywhere else to manage RAID controller.

Hi DarrenT,

Your understanding is correct, following the standard setup from F1-SystemSettings-Storage to access the RAID management is the preferred method. I saw the articles on Broadcom support page as well, it seems like no options to access the RAID WebBIOS configuration on X3250M6 because of the lack of PS/2 emulation if a UEFI compatible operating system is installed and the boot mode is set to UEFI in BIOS. My apologies for taking your time on this topic.
