System x3950 6241 Are non-lenovo DDR4 memory supported?

2021-01-20, 7:14 AM

Will be upgrading to DDR4 compute books.   Do I need to use lenovo truDDr4 memory or other tier 1 vendor's ddr4 memory can be used?  Have some micron 8G 2400T sticks lying around that I hope can use.

Hi Sir,

Only Lenovo TruDDR4 Memory is compatibility tested and tuned to maximize performance and reliability. TruDDR4 Memory has a unique signature that is programmed into the DIMM that enables System x servers to verify whether the memory that is installed is qualified or supported by Lenovo. Because TruDDR4 Memory is authenticated, certain extended memory performance features can be enabled to extend performance over industry standards.

Please find more information in the Lenovo System x3950 X6 (6241) Product Guide

Re:System x3950 6241 Are non-lenovo DDR4 memory supported?

I tried the DDR4 compute books with the micro 2400T memory E7 8880 V3 cpus and got "No Memory Could be Configured" error.   I can not enter  UEFI setup.   But IMM2 shows everything healthy.  The memory SPD data is correct.   Does this mean I have to use Lenovo memory just to run DDR4 books?   From the guide it looks like the advantage of Lenovo memory is higher than official speed in some cases.

I have ordered some lenovo official memory to test but I worry that there is something else at play here to prevent me from running DDR4 books.

Thanks

Hi Sir,

What memory was originally installed on this system?

Would you please try to install original memory to check if it can boot up, and then check BIOS version first.

I put in two sticks of approved Lenovo memory in the lower node (in stand alone mode) and it worked,  was able to enter bios setup.
So it seems that the system is pretty picky on the DDR4 memory.

Thanks

These systems only supports 1Rx4 8G or 2Rx4  16G for Rank 1/2 dimm.     If you put in 1RX4 8G sticks it may work while only giving you informational errors about serial number not recognized.    The reason it didn't work for me is that the micron sticks are 1Rx8 dimms.

The Rank/Density requirements are specified in the guide document for the system.

Hi Sir,

You can refer to the System x3950 X6 Installation and Service Guide section Installing a memory module for more detail information about memory installation rule.
