Sytem x3250 M6 type 3633 RAM Compatibility

2019-09-13, 8:07 AM

Hi,

My Lenovo System x3250 M6 type 3633 is running with two SK hynix 8GB 2Rx8 PC4-2133P-EE0-11 (total 16GB) and I recently acquired another two more SK hynix 16GB 2Rx4 PC4-2133P-RA0-10. I've tried and the server failed to boot with the error message memory error.

I've tried removed SK hynix 8GB 2Rx8 PC4-2133P-EE0-11 from RAM slot and installed with just SK hynix 16GB 2Rx4 PC4-2133P-RA0-10, unfortunately is also failed to boot. So I suspect could it be RAM compatibility issue or is there steps that I've missed?

Thanks

Regards,

Chong

Hi Danny, thanks for the reply. The guide is very informative, however, it still doesn't solve my problem. Could you perhaps see if there's any difference among these RAM?

1.) SK Hynix 16GB 2Rx4 PC4-2133P-RA0-10
2.) SK Hynix 8GB 2Rx8 PC4-2133P-EE0-11
3.) Samsung 8GB 1Rx8 PC4-2400T-ED1-11

Beside the x2,x4 or x8 bit width difference, I'm not sure if the E "Unbuffered" and R "Registered" followed by JEDEC SPD Revision Encoding and Additions level (-10 & -11) got any effect?

By the way, the exact error message that I'm receiving is actually: System Halted: Memory Configuration Error

Thanks.

Regards,

Chong

Dear,

Initial review, your machine still hit the issue even only install the new DIMMs. Looks like the new DIMM have some issues.

1. compatibility issue

I didn't find this 16GB 2Rx4 model in the product guide as below:

https://lenovopress.com/lp0096-system-x3250-m6-intel-xeon-e3-1200-v5-core-i3-pentium-celeron-g-series

https://lenovopress.com/lp0600-system-x3250-m6-intel-xeon-e3-1200-v5-v6-core-i3-pentium-celeron-g-series

I also didn't find it in the supported list(ServerProven)

2. New DIMM itself defect

Can you visual inspect the new DIMM to see if any abnormal on it?

3. You can test it with only one new DIMM installed, if still fail, this may tell us the new DIMM couldn't be used on this machine.

Based on the above, it is mostly the compatibility issue.

Karl

Dear,

Looking from the picture 1, this DIMM is not qualified by Lenovo, there is no Lenovo label.

Suggest not to use it on this machine.

Hi Karl, Thanks for the quick respond. If based on the guide by Danny, very likely it's unsuported by my Lenovo Sytem x3250 M6 type 3633 server. I've tested with just 1 RAM installed and it still giving me the same error. By visual inspection, very likely is not RAM issue because I've 2 pcs of this SK Hynix 16GB 2Rx4 PC4-2133P-RA0-10, but compatibility issue as you've suggested.

So my question now, is my server board only support Unbuffered with ECC industry RAM?

Thanks!

Regards

Chong

By the way, can you kindly please supply me the link to Server Proven link as this link doesn't seems to work for me: http://www.lenovo.com/serverproven

I want to check the supported RAM type or list. This SK Hynix 16GB 2Rx4 PC4-2133P-RA0-10 seems is "Registered" RAM and very likely is unsupported by my server board.

Thanks

Hi Sir,

According to the System x3250 M6 srever documentation, the server memory specification as following:

Memory:

  • Minimum: 4 GB
  • Maximum: 64 GB
  • Types: PC4-17000 (dual-rank), 2133 MHz or 2400 MHz, error correcting code (ECC), double-data-rate 4 (DDR4) unbuffered dual inline memory modules (DIMMs) only
  • Slots: four DIMM slots, two-way interleaved

Actually all memory you installed are not in the Sytem x3250 M6 support list. Please refer the compatible memory list from server proven website as below.

Hi Danny, thanks for the clarification. As per my photo attachment.
Item 1.) Registered RAM with ECC 2133P, not recognize by the system

Item 2.) Unbuffered RAM with ECC 2133P, work as it is (original from Lenovo, check sticker)

Item 3.) Unbuffered RAM with ECC 2400T, work as it is, even mixed with item 2

So, I've doubt on your statement, "all memory" are incompatile. Anyway, thanks for your kind respond. I appreciate that.

Chong
