Unable to update firmware on x3550 M3 (7944) and x3650 M3 (7945)

2017-05-02, 20:28 PM

Hello,

I have been able to update all firmware on x3550 M3 (7944) and x3650 M3 (7945) servers with BOMC (while it was still IBM branded). I just downloaded the latest BOMC branded Lenovo on a win 10 (https://support.lenovo.com/downloads/DS119115) and I get the following error message "An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart".

I tried burning the ISO straight to a thumb drive and saved the ISO to disk and used my trustworthy utility to do ISO to USB as usual.

One server has windows 2008 32 bit and another has FreeBSD I was unable to update either.

Any suggestions?

Hi marcoferr74

If you are trying to update f/w from USB drive, you may try to create the media in USB directly.

This option will create a bootable USB device for f/w update.

BTW, BoMC will format the USB drive that you selected. Please backup any data in the USB.

In current BOMC, we only support the EFI boot not legacy boot. The correct procedure is as following:

1. Insert the BOMC USB key you made from Windows 10 to the X3x50 M3 system

2. Press F1 after power on the system

3. Choose the 'Boot Manager'

There maybe mutilplt 'storage' in the boot device manager. Please confirm there is 'USB' word in the device Path.

Please marked solved if the above procedure is workable.

Thank you for your answer. I was too quick writing how I created the ISO.
I tried two methods:
1) writing the ISO directly to the usb thumb drive.
2) I had the iso written to my win10 hdd and then copied the iso with a utility that burns iso to usb thumb drives.

Neither method provided me with a successful boot.

I usually press the F12 during the post to see the boot manager and I chose USB storage, which did come on with a blinking light...so data was accessed on it (and the path did show a USB path) but the image burned on the thumb drive just does not boot. I will publish pictures asap.

When you make the BOMC, did you choose the following option "write driectly to device":

BOMC_media format_USB.png

The target usb thumb disk should contain the following folders:

EFI, LiveOS, menu and update.

Would you mind to retest it again without export any ISO or image files.

Re: Unable to update firmware on x3550 M3 (7944) and x3650 M3 (7945)

I am trying to recover primary firmware of System x3650 M3 (7945). I downloaded Lenovo XClarity Essentials version 11.5 BoMC from https://datacentersupport.lenovo.com/th/en/solutions/lnvo-bomc and made bootable USB. When I booted the server with secondary/backup firmware + USB flash dirive, I found error message at step of firmware comparision "Error(s) occur while comparing! Error message: No BMC Lan over USB device detected"

Has anyone experienced problem like this? How to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance for your help.
