best possible raid configration M5210 and esxi 6.5

2017-06-06, 9:33 AM

Hello!

We have a X3650M5 with 14 Discs at a M5210 with BBU.

May I ask, if this is the best possible raid configuration for the local storage of the ESXi-6.5-Server.

(RAID10 with 10 Disks and 2 HotSpare-Disks)

And the settings, see image.

Thanks and regards

Luke

Please review the following two links to determine what is the best practice for you.

There is comparism chart. You can determine what is best for you.

The "best possible" configuration is subjective to your environment as to how it will perform based on the RAID configuration you implement. There is some general guidance in the post below yours. You will have to decide whether best means max usable capacity, or optimized performance on the drives.

RAID10 will give you best WRITE performance, but you lose half your capacity; RAID10 may also offer better high availability for disk - depending on which disk fails in the sets.

RAID5/6 will give you more capacity, but less WRITE performance due to parity calculcations (RAID6 being slower than RAID5)

You will need to understand you environment (i.e. what your VMs are doing). Most virtual environments have a 70/30 - R/W ratio, but this is not always the case. It is highly depenend on the apps running in the VMs.

Having said that, you should load up ESXi on either a USB Key or the SD Adapter with 2 SD cards (that you can put in R1) - this way you can use your drives strictly for your datastore.

This helped me too
