fan speed going up and down

2019-11-16, 17:35 PM

Hello, community,

I modified the original fans of my x3250 M5 system because they were noisy.
As a replacement, I installed Noctua NF-A4x20 PWM these fans have a different specification.
Rotational speed Max 5000 RPM
Rotational speed min 1200 RPM
I would like to change the values in IMM, because at the moment I have this to set.

ipmitool
Fan 1 Tach | 5040.000 | RPM | ok | na | 3500.000 | na | na | na | na
Fan 2 Tach | 5390.000 | RPM | ok | na | 3500.000 | na | na | na | na
Fan 3 Tach | 5250.000 | RPM | ok | na | 3500.000 | na | na | na | na
Fan 4 Tach | 5460.000 | RPM | ok | na | 3500.000 | na | na | na | na
Fan 5 Tach | 5320.000 | RPM | ok | na | 3500.000 | na | na | na | na

ipmiutil
_ID_ SDR_Type_xx ET Own Typ S_Num Sens_Description Hex & Interp Reading
000a SDR Full 01 01 20 a 04 snum 40 Fan 1 Tach = 49 OK 5110.00 RPM
000b SDR Full 01 01 20 a 04 snum 41 Fan 2 Tach = 21 Crit-lo 2310.00 RPM
000c SDR Full 01 01 20 a 04 snum 42 Fan 3 Tach = 48 OK 5040.00 RPM
000d SDR Full 01 01 20 a 04 snum 43 Fan 4 Tach = 41 OK 4550.00 RPM
000e SDR Full 01 01 20 a 04 snum 44 Fan 5 Tach = 35 OK 3710.00 RPM

I would like to modify in order to have these parameters.

Fan 1 Tach | 5040.000 | RPM | ok | 1100.000 | 1200.000 | 1300.000 | 4800.000 | 4900.000 | 5000.000

The speed of the fans goes up and down all the time, I have my event log that is saturated.

Do you have any idea?? Maybe one of you has already encountered this problem?

Thank you.

There is surely a possibility to make changes via the "RAW" command
I saw some examples on https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/comments/aa3xj7/ibm_systemx_3650_m2_fan_speed_control/
But that doesn't work for me :smileymad: :smileymad:

Hello Henock
did you manage that already? I have the same problem as you. I've already tried everything and did not get it to work.

Hi Benob,
I had a busy week, I didn't have time to focus on this problem.
I have retrieved some additional information about my fans.
Via the RAW command, I think it is possible to change the settings.

Sensor ID              : Fan 1 Tach (0x40)
Entity ID             : 29.1 (Fan Device)
Sensor Type (Threshold)  : Fan (0x04)
 Sensor Reading        : No Reading
 Status                : Not Available
 Nominal Reading       : 5390.000
 Normal Minimum        : 2660.000
 Normal Maximum        : 17850.000
 Lower critical        : 3500.000
 Positive Hysteresis   : Unspecified
 Negative Hysteresis   : 560.000
 Minimum sensor range  : Unspecified
 Maximum sensor range  : Unspecified
 Event Message Control : Per-threshold
 Readable Thresholds   : lcr
 Settable Thresholds   :
 Threshold Read Mask   : lcr
>> Sending IPMI command payload
>>    netfn   : 0x04
>>    command : 0x2b
>>    data    : 0x40

When I enter this order

ipmitool -I lanplus -H 19.17.1.1 -U USERID -P PASSW0RD raw 0x04 0x2b 0x40

I get in return

e0 00
